I'm sure most of you carry an air compressor to re-inflate your tires after going off roading. If you don't have one yet, this is a great one to have. I got mine for my 4x4 Tacoma and hard-wired it in with a relay, a dash switch, and a remote fitting that matches all of my power tools. It has worked well for many years and I'm going to be puttting one into the baja, too. It comes with a cool little carrying case, a 12vdc cigarette lighter adapter, and an air hose, but I'll probably plumb it in somewhere like I did on the truck. I used to use a Hadley dual purpose air horn compressor, but it didn't last long so I scrapped it a long time ago. This one actually has great reviews with the 4x4 guys because it puts out a lot more air than most units, and fills big tires pretty fast. The only problem I've had with mine is that once at the Colorado river it stopped working after filling up air rafts for 15 or 20 minutes in 115 degree weather. It must have a hi-temp cut off built into it, because it worked fine after that, and it's worked great ever since.

I picked the first one up for $29.95 at Pep Boys. I haven't seen one again for that price though. I bought one for my dad for $39.95 at Pep Boys after that, which is still a pretty good deal.

It's a Master Flow Tsunami Model MF-1050 for those who are interested.

I bought one of those at CHeckers a few years back. It's a little powerhouse!

HA!

I finally won one on Ebay and it arrived today. I got it for $24.99 ($40.99 including shipping from Arizona). I've been looking all over for one at a reasonable price since January when I originally posted this. These compressors are bitchin!

I've been thinking of ways to put one in my car too. I'll have to check that one out.

You guys thought about making your air compressor tanks inside your tree bars? or front bumper? Many 4x4s do it.

(update: jump to the link below, they seem to sell them for 24,99us, but that was 4 years ago...)

I stole this... Uhm, I quote this from a 4x4 forum, interesting:

UPDATE! I talked to a lady at Q Industries for a good 20 minutes about their compressors. The MV-50 and MF-1050 are the EXACT SAME compressor. She admitted the only difference was marketing reasons. The MV-50 (model number only) is basically being discontinued because.....its a long story.

Kragen, Checkers, and Schuck's auto stores have discontinued the MV-50 and have no plans to carry the MF-1050....another long story. The only reason you can possibly still find the MV-50 for $25 is because those auto stores i mentioned are taking a huge loss on what they have leftover in their warehouses.

PepBoys sells the "newer" MF-1050 for $49.99-59.99
Its its still worth every cent! These compressors origanally sold for 69.99 and other stores are still selling it for even more.

Now heres the big update which i very well may be the first to know
In the next couple weeks, Q Industries are comming out with a Twin Cylinder/Piston compressor thats essentially two MF-1050 compressors in one. It's already known as "The Dually" which is what the guys at Q Industries are calling it. Its going to be marketed specifically to 4X4 wheelers.
They have a prototype made that has gone through testing and produces twice the amount of CFM as the current MF-1050. The price tag will be at or near $200 (Still a lot cheaper than the $300-$400+ Quick Air units)
The lady i spoke to was very aware of the Off Road community and how their compressors have been important in relation to sales. She also mentioned 'Quick Air' while talking about comparison. Im expecting to hear back from her soon as Q Industries are ready to put their new compressor into production.

I don't see much reason to even have an air tank in a baja, really. If you were to do it, the 1-1/2" tubing wouldn't hold much anyway, not compared to a 4" or larger bumper on a 4x4. I'll probably tinker around with where to install the compressor in the next couple of days, and post some pix when I get it figured out.

Dutch.... I remember seeing that article a while back. I've never seen the dual compressor, though.

It seems like that would be a bit difficult to use just to air up and air down in the dirt. You'd have to take all your wheels off one at a time to get them by the engine, right? Doesn't that thread into your spark plug hole?

Yes it does use a sparkplug hole but my hose reached from the engine on my old long bed pickup to all four tires. Would not use it on an engine with a puter, would probably give it a fit trying to figure out what is happening.

Kinda a trade off yes you do have to pull a plug but sure saves weight and room.

There's two reasons I was thinking of having a tank- one, I already have a compressor (that would require a tank). Two, I had also thought about using it to power a set of mother-effing train horns under the one-piece front end, cuz I'm about sick to death of being pulled out in front of by morons who apparently think "eff it, it's only a itty-bitty VW" (and I have no horn at all to respond to that stupidity with currently- a finger is only good if they SEE it).

Sorry- bit of a rant mixed in there with that reply. I'm kinda wound up right now- I have a 15 year-old son that's frustrating me greatly today. Mad

I used to have a set of Hadley air horns under mine. When I blew them, it was certainly a surprise to the intended target!

Got lots of smiles from them horns.

LOL

That's sorta what I've got in mind. I've been wanting a set for awhile, but originally I wanted them for my pickup. NOW, I think the first set I get will be for the baja. Laughing

I spent the evening trying to make this damn thing fit underneath the passenger's seat next to my jack, but despite my hours of effort and taking the pump completely apart.... I wasn't able to build the ship inside the bottle. I put it all back together and will just use it as-is for now. It'll work fine.

This is probably the first time in my life that I actually bought something for the baja and am using it without modifying it. It's driving me nuts because I know it can be made better.

Dammit.

LOL!

I'm happy, though.
