so, far all your help has been great so far.

got the engine mounted up, valves adjusted (supposedly), all lines and electrical hooked up, spark plugs gapped and installed.
ready to go right?
kept trying to turn over, nothing.
had to jump it with my buddies truck.
would turn-over run for a second and then backfire out the carb: (
rechecked the valves. i had them adjusted to .004 inches and in the wrong sequence rather than .006
alright, so i went to go again and it runs really harsh.
sounds like a mild cam, where it studders on occassion...

so what i need to know is, why does it seem like the engine is only running on 2 cylinders and shakes violently?
with start up i need to give it gas, but as i let off, it slowly croaks out.
wtf?

anybody know what might be happening?

CHECK YOUR TIMING, POINTS?,PLUG WIRES ON RIGHT CYL?, WHAT TYPE OF CARB? CHECK YOU PLUG WIRES AND TIMING FIRST!!

sounds like timing to me. def chek the plug wires.

For starters .004 is too tight on the valves. On a fresh motor I set them at .007 and then re adjust to .006 after running it a couple of days. Its better to have a valve a little loose than tight, a tight valve can cause a burnt valve. Your firing order is 1-4-3-2 clockwise on the distributor. The number one cylinder is the passenger side closest to the flywheel, and number 2 in on the same side. Number 3 is driver side closest to the flywheel and you should know where #4 is by the time you get this far :mrgreen:, but I agree with madman, it sounds like a timing issue, or plug wires in the wrong place.

all the wires are going to the right places, checked it like 8 times, even took all wires off to make sure...

how do i get to check the timing if i can't get the motor to run for more than a few seconds?

as for the correct sequence, which book is better to follow. i would think the BENTLEY manual for VW's over the HANES manual would work better.

as for timing, is it 7.5 before or after TDC?

any other ideas?

It's before and that's with a stock distributor. It's good enough to get you started. Turn it to 7degs before TDC and see where the rotor is. Don't panic if it's not on #1 cyl. rotate the cranck around one more time and see if it lines up with#1cyl. Many times the distibutor gear is not properly set when engines are rebuilt, causing you to get creatinve with the spark plug wires.

Turn the motor over and line up the timing mark with TDC. Make sure both valves are closed on #1 cylinder. Pull the distibutor cap and line the cap up with where the rotor os pointing. It should fire at that point. Dont be afraid to leave the dizzy a little loose so you can turn it a little each way if it doesnt fire, but only turn it a tiny bit at a time.

got all valves adjusted to .007
started it up, ran a little better, adjusted the distributer.
still runs bad.
just noticed;
#1 and 2 exhaust pipes were pretty toast after revving it to keep it alive

#3 and 4 were almost completely cold???

pulled the plugs... #3 wet with gas and a little bit of color...
pulled the #4 and it was dry...

anybody know why this would be the only one that is dry?
