so im thinking ahead about an alternator conversion for the 1600dp (currently using stocky generator). Im looking at somthing 75amp or more. are there any donor car alternators we can use? (other vehicle makes) i have access to 5 or 6 junk/impound yards that are free to my plunderous hands. just dont feel like spending $250+ for an alt. setup

The thing to keep in mind here is that your alternator is also your cooling fan, so you have to fond one that has the through shaft for the fan too. I don't know specifically what other alternators will work, if any. Old Porsche units probably will...

hmm good point... say, what if i got rid of the stock fan shroud and tin, put in a big ole fan of my own in place, wired to the key so its always cooling?.... or is that delving too deep into the original setup? i know VW designed everything to work together like clockwork so mods to engine cooling and tin should be avoided... but maybe this could work just as well if not better??? Confused

You can certainly give that a shot, but if you get a generic 75 amp alternator for a hundred bucks (for the sake of discussion, I'm not sure what they really run) , that leaves you 150 to get it right with the fan arrangement the first time. There won't be a second time because if it's not right at first you'll burn up your motor and be looking at more than the cost of an alternator...

caveat emptor

You can use a 63 amp GM alternator for $40 here

www.partsamerica.com/P...11&PTSet=A

And I have heard of people making an adapter chaft off of the back of the VW generator and going direct shaft drive to the GM alternator. You just gut the stock generator and the GM alternator site behind the fan shroud. In bajas and steet beetles you will have to cut the firewall for clearance.

OR..........

You could fab a bracket on the front of the motor and run a longer belt IF you can find room..

hmm its starting to look like the safest and easiest way is going to be with the overpriced VW alternator kit..
