Can any one suggest a good oil for a '69 1600 CC motor?

um well I sell Amsoil Smile I would definitely recommend a synthetic oil, your engine will run much cooler with it as opposed to conventional oil. If you're interested send me a PM

If you go with off the shelf try Mobil 1 synthetic or even Royal Purple (if you can find it, I think Checkers carries it) Oh yeah and synthetic will protect better.

I am a little bias though. Smile I run Amsoil in everything!

Castrol is not a bad choice though.

Well not to knock the synthetics, but I have seen many VW motors use it and leak like crazy. I would recomend the brand of your choice, and straight 30 in the winter and straight 40 in the summer. I have found the multi viscosity oils dont like the high temps of the air cooled motors and will have a lower oil pressure when the engine is hot. (this is my personal opinion and I am sure somebody will dispute it) Cool

How could anyone dispute our resident master of VWs?

I agree with Zyla.

Amsoil is the best out there but it just hasn't really caught on as much here on the west coast.

Wink Thanks 1fasthoe for the testimonial! Smile

Every fluid in my truck is Amsoil and I only have to change my oil every 25k... yes I do really mean 25,000 miles!

Ok this is really starting to sound like a sales pitch so I digress... I just really believe in the stuff!

OK Mr. Amsoil, how about posting up a price list and recommendations for applications. Most of us have other vehicles also and need fluids. And don't forget the "good guy" discount. Wink

There is nothing wrong with a little shameless plug on occasion.

Laughing I will work on a price list and recommendations for all the Wonderful AzBaja folks.

There is an application guild on the corporate site as well as off the other fun stuff. If you see anything let me know and i will give you a better price than what's on the site.

www.amsoil.com

I have NO problem with giving the "good guy" price to the members here. I love this site and all the people here. Everyone I have actually had a chance to meet is great and have helped me out.

There was a test run in Hot VW’s magazine in June 2001. They measured crank and pushrod tube seals. Then immersed them in heated synthetic oil for 24 hours and checked the dimensions again. In a summary of results Amsoil 20w-50 cam out on top 4 out of 8 tests, Castol 5w-50 3 and Mobil 1 15w-50 1. They said any leaks would be cause by gasket material being incompatible and expanding too far. Seal brands tested were Elring, Sabo, and generic Taiwan brand.
