Hi Again,

Hope I am not trying folks patience here. I do appreciate the help.

If I am able to get a baja, I will want a daily driver (probably get parked during the real hot and real cold months). Trouble is, I am by no means a mechanic, never pulled an engine or suspension apart, though I know how to turn a wrench and am willing to learn.

Not sure where to start. Will owning an old bug always be a labor of love? Understanding I will not have the money to just put all new into a car, will it always take some tinkering to keep it road-worthy?

I guess I just don't know what to expect from an old car.

Anyone willing to give me some tips on what to look out for when looking at a used baja? I am not finding much close to me (Utah), so will probably be traveling just to look at cars, which will severely limit my choices (I hate it when work gets in the way of fun!).

Looking around Samaba classified, there is quite a lot of price varience, with not much in the discriptions to show a new guy why.

Thanks for any advice and replies.

A good place to start would be the books "How to keep your Volkswagen alive a manual of step by step procedures for the complete idiot" and "Baja bugs and buggies". The first book will tell you what to look for in a used car, how to drive it and teach most repair processes right down to what tools and parts are needed before starting the repair. On the web there used to be “Bob Hoover’s sermons” about increasing VW’s lifespan, but I think they were removed.
Old cars will need more maintence than new ones at least once a year you will have to adjust carb mixture, valves, clutch, and if timing is not electronic set point gap and timing.

It's not the hard, I would replace any thing on my car that needed need atention more than I wanted to do. Drum brkes on a VW need to be adjusted ever 2 or 3 months if your daily drivin' If you park your car for the off times, when way to hot and way to cold use tht time to adjust your brakes, valves etc. then it's not that big of a deal, but if not look into things like disc brakes etc.

They do seem to require some tinkering from time to time, but they aren't any more complicated than a quad, and parts are abundant and cheap.

I say GO FOR IT!

An old VW is just like our member here "Bajafun"
You will get pissed off at it and kick it a few times, and God only know you need to take a wrench to reguarly. But you learn to love it once you get used to it.

P.S. It will also leave a funny smelling mark where it goes.

barring "oh crap!" moments, once you get it into proper working order, the routine maintenance on an old dub is no more complex than the routine maint on a new car. Basically, brakes adjusted every 3 mos or so, oil and valve adjustment every 3k miles or 3 months no matter what, (this is simple and takes 30 minutes total) chassis lubrication every 6 mos and an alternator or generator belt yearly, whether it looks good or not.

Aside from that, fix the crap that breaks or wears out as needed and drive it like you stole it. Smile

Thanks for the replies and advice.

I guess I'll have to break down and buy one of the books that may help me evaluate the old bugs that I see.

Not having a lot of luck finding anything yet. Would almost like to find something that needed some help, so I could learn a bit before I started getting off road with it.

Thanks again.

Hey, I'm in Utah, too, so I'll try to answer some of your questions.

First of all, a Bug will be far cheaper to fix than any new car. If properly maintained, it shouldn't break down any more often. If you can do the work yourself (fairly simple on a bug), you'll often come out ahead with an older car.

Secondly, I'm currently looking for a Baja as well. I'm in the Salt Lake area, and there are tons of decent deals on Bajas and other non-Supers around here. You can get a good driver for $1500. I haven't bought one yet, but I feel confident I'll find one soon.

Third, as for legality, it depends on your county. Salt Lake can be pretty stiff, they'll make you pass emissions and have fenders and bumpers that extend beyond your tires. Where I live, I'm good to go if my lights and horn work. I'd suggest taking the car to an inspection station, and give the guy the money to inspect it. Then you'll know what you need to change so you can fix it and take it back. If it passes the second time, you don't have to pay the fee twice, and you'll know you're all legal.

Anyway, good luck with it all, I'm just starting to get into Bajas as well, so we're in the same boat!
