Post Post subject: Getting Started (hopefully this weekend)

So I am finally getting started..

Here is a bad picture of my car that I took with my cell phone:

There currently is no motor, no seats, no guages....basically its just a shell.

What I was thinking, since this is my first project car, is to pull off the body, and sand down and paint the frame first, and start doing the work with the body off (brake lines, engine etc). This weekend I was planning on working on taking off the body and starting the sanding process, but I haven't decided whether to prime and paint the frame, or to use something like huculiner or rhino liner to actually coat the frame.

I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on where they would start this project, on what I should do with the frame, or if what I am planning seems like a bad idea in general. Like I said..this is brand new to me, and I am trying to do the least expensive parts now, so I can save up for a decent motor. My intention is to make this off road capable as well as a daily driver. I like to rock climb and am planning on trying out for the mountain rescue team, so I would like something that can handle off road well, and be street legal as well.

Thanks

It sort of depends on the condition of your pan (frame) as far as rust goes. The pan floorboards are typically dented up, and the battery tray is frequently rusted through the floor. If the pan is structurally sound, you can have it sandblasted for about $50 I'm told (top and bottom), and then you can apply (or pay to have it done) bedliner or POR-15, which is a similar material, to the pan.

Taking the body off and starting on the pan is the most common starting point. The pan, suspension, transmission, and finally the engine usually, then the body to finish it off. The pan and attached components can cost you LOTS of $$$$ if you want to spend it.

Good luck!

I would start on the pan also. Strip it down to a bare pan and then determine if you need to install new pan sections or not. If so do this before you have it blasted. Sand blasting is $60 out at Soutwest Sandblasting & Painting in Chandler. You can then coat it with your choice of paint, POR15 or Herculiner, I recomend the herculiner. The start re-assebmling it from there.

Thanks guys!

Daryll, how difficult is it to apply the herculiner? Did you spray it on, or roll it on? I think would rather go that route.

We spray it. If you dont want to mess with it, we can spray it for $200 and that includes the cost of 4 qts od herculiner at $25 per. Or you can also roll it on.
