Well, I was convinced that I needed to stay with a '66 or older car to avoid screwing with emissions. But, I must be honest, I'm seriously considering buying an early 70's car which would require emissions testing. How much of a PITA is it? How limited are you in the upgrades you can do to the motor???

Thanks.

Well I cheat on the 67 & up cars, if they have an other than stock motor in them, I just swap it with a stocker and take it through that way to save all of the BS of detuning it.

My friend has a 68' with a 1915 Mofoco motor in it and it is a PITA to get through emissions. Last time it involved, rejetting the carb,
(Weber) retarding the timing and a splash or two of methanol. Next year, we are just gonna swap in the stock 1200 i have in my garage.

Bad news Myk, You have to go through emissions if you live in AJ now. BTW, how is the house coming?

If you work in Maricopa County, you have to test.

Ok- that I knew about, and I have no doubt that EVERYONE who lives out there and works in Maricopa County abides by it.

I thought you were implying that all residents of Pinal County were now required to test...

Keeping a stocker for testing makes a lot of sense to me. BUT. When I had my '75 tested (stock-rebuilt 1600DP, NEW 34 PICT, runs perfect) it BARELY passed on HC Idle, AFTER adjusting the new carb using a tailpipe sniffer. THEN they scrutenized the hell out of the gasoline vapor canisters (2) & the hose connections. Of course they ckecked for the trap door in the gas tank filler neck too. PITA?! Three trips thru emissions, three trips to the buggy shop & one trip to the AZ Dept. of Environmental Quality station for a referee opinion on the vapor can issue! If I could do a "do-over", I think I'd buy a pre-'67 & go thru the trouble of upgrading everything from the rear torsiontube back. Electrics & all. Or move.

I think that's a smart move AZ350X! Maybe you can find a '68 or later (I think that's 1st year IRS) wreck that was smashed in the front (read cheap) - you did post that your project was stripped to the pan, right? I don't remember what year VW went from single port to dual port and 12 volt electrics, but that could be another benefit as well. Can you spell TORCH?! p.s. Maybe I should look for a pre '67 that was rear ended, come to think of it.

I've got two '65 pans right now, so I'm good to go. My main pan is titled and already has IRS pivot brackets welded in. That's the one my 3x3's are going on.

My second pan is my complete car right now. It's got no title, but it's currently AZ titled and not stolen, so I'm going to title it. That one's going to stay swingaxle and get my sunroof body and a motor to be mama's own street bug...

Anyway, I'm all set to say BYE BYE to emissions!!!
