Yeah, I did the latter, then held the backing plate pulling toward the drum to see if I had any rub... Weird thing was is that one side needed ground much more than the other, so obviously one of the drums may not be exactly the right one and that was the source of the problem.

Too muggy for me to work any during the day so I'm looking forward to cooler days ahead. I'll test drive then inspect the fronts, and adjust all. Reduce leaks, etc. LOL list never ends you know.

The brakes definitely need adjustment, but no strange noises. Battery Voltage was low at 10 or so, then after about a mile it came up to 12 just as I was pulling into the driveway. I think although the battery cranks vigorously, it's going to go bad. The Alternator idiot light worked normally so I'm confident as I can be that that isn't the source of the issue.

I'm considering a Night run up to Table Mesa Road area on Friday. I'll post up Time/Location if anyone would want to tag along. Not going to get crazy, just try to get lost for a while in the dark and see if we can find the Tow Vehicle using GPS. Hopefully I won't get stuck and get lost to only find I never got more than a Mile or so away from the Tow Vehicle again. LOL

I almost ran this guy over!

You guys missed a great night to be out. My brakes continue to be an issue and I chewed up the hardware and shoes I just put on. We limped back to the X and pulled the drum, emptied the pieces and put it back together.

We must have passed my Xterra 4-5 times before we finally found the REAL Trail! It was fun and we took it as far as we could before it was just getting too late,, er early. LOL We turned back at what's left of an old house on the left side of the trail. 9958 I think was the trail#. There was a narly little climb to the right that we took. It took me 3 tries to get up it. Lot of sand right there so it was hard to get momentum. There was even more sand at the top.

The return trip was fun after we stopped at Waffle house it was pouring rain! Got to my house and it was dry around 3:30.

VDO Volt meter also took a dump the glass is touching the needle, so I'll have to look at that.

All in all a good trip and I can't wait to hit that trail to take it all the way next time! That is if I can find it. lol

Thanks Dalton for the Lights! They made a huge difference!

I forgot to say Thanks for the Tires Npetric! I'm sure I would have toasted another sidewall without them. I clipped a rock that almost ripped the steering wheel out of my hands. I haven't looked for the damage yet, but it held up better than the others ever could.

A few weeks ago I discovered the driver side front bearing had gotten water logged at some point (yes, I forgot to seal the speedo cable at the spindle Embarassed ) so they were shot. Was pleasantly shocked that a local auto store had 'em. Replaced both sides and RTV'd the cable/spindle. Also replaced one of the outer CV boots (driver side again,,,,???)
Took her, the wife and pooch for a long ride up through the Appalachian mountains. All pavement unfortunately.

At least you got it out! Thanks for the tip on the Speedo cable. Not like it usually rains here much, but it's something to consider.

Npetric, the tires held up great! I can totally see where they got some rock rash, but they show no signs of puncturing!

Old oil cooler replaced with doghouse style. Also spent time sanding, priming and painting the doghouse shroud and supporting tins.

Later this week I will install all the tins and start work on the carb.

Also installed heater boxes and exhaust system.

I agree with Dalton. Look at the inside of the drum in the picture. The pictures of the car above show lug bolts, but this pic of the brake shoe damage shows lug stud heads with wear from hitting the shoes. You MAY have a mismatch of drum to backing plates.

I like to seal the cable at the back of the spindle and at the cap. I also seal the OD of the bearing caps. The areas you put RTV on need to be completely clean of grease before you apply the RTV. I generally clean the caps completely and re-paint them when I service the brakes and/or bearings. The RTV can be made smooth and neat by using your finger tip with a little spit or water with dish soap. The RTV then wipes off your fingers easily too after you're done. This not only keeps water and dirt out, it prevents the grease creep on the outside.

They're actually 1/2 ton chevy wheel studs. I drilled out the drums after I stripped one side out and lost the Wheel while off-roading and put them in. I forgot to grind the backs down before pulling through the drum. I used a grinder to take them down to where the stock stuff cleared, but evidently not enough. The replacement stuff needed even more grinding, but again I didn't go far enough.

Next time I'll get it or do as suggested and shim it.

Don't have any issues at all on the other side and only needed minimal grinding to clear stock stuff. The drums are different from each other so I'm going to go through my parts and see if I have a match to the side that works.

Actually works great without retaining springs, but I'd rather have it right for obvious reasons. Thanks for the info.

Installed a trigger shifter and replaced the broken wing window.

It's the little things that make a big difference.

Replaced the swing axle boots (again), changed the oil & filter, new intake boots, checked the clutch, cleaned everything up. Next is to rebuild the front beam with new ball joints, & shocks.

Getting my engine ready for a ride to the car wash. It's time for new pistons and cylinders. A cam swap is also in the plans.

Note cylinders 1 and 2. They looked as good as the other side just a few months ago. It pays to pull the fan shroud and clean the fins on a regular basis.

Busted an accelerator cable in the driveway. They're pretty cheap at OReillys so I'll get a spare to keep with me.
