That is why I had said it was hearsay. The guys that have tried to dealt with him lately have been very mad so alot of the talk could be coming from anger.

In fact this motor is pretty bitchin. The guy I bought the buggy off of threw all the money at the motor and nothing else. Interesting move.

And congrats to SMOKEY! That this is awesome. I suppose AZ doesnt have the same laws as CA, (regarding light covers, mud flaps and that nonsense) otherwise I would be dying from laughter at the irony of the police giving an illegal automobile designed like a police car a best in show award. Twisted Evil

Rolling around under the engine, grabbed the joint between the trailing arm and engine mount tubes that support the engine and trans. The huge bolt with the 17mm allen head FELL out. WOW. Regreased, replaced, and re-torqued the crap out of it. Good buggy karma i guess.

Got most of the heater hoses hooked up Thursday. Ended up using heavy duty 3" alluminum dryer hose between the heater boxes and the body. I cut off some of the bellows (OEM hose between boxes and body) to help fill the gap between. Works pretty good.
Saturday and today was spent digging out form the blizzard we've suffered here in Northern Va. Now that's done, I may take the Baja out for some fun in the snow.

total engine rebuild. You guys know anything about Bergmann motors?

Your in the VW heaven state. Steel Bugging and Brothers Machine do very good work at bargin basement prices. With any engine it is up to you 1. install all the cooling tin. 2 To use a dwell meter, timing light and Air/Fuel ratio guage to make sure it is in tune before using it. 3. Install guages (head temp, oil pressure, oil temp, A/F ratio) to know about a problem before it become a bad problem. Any displacement well built VW engine from 1600 to 2500 ccs with a W100 style cam will last 60,000-100,00 miles if kept in tune and well maintained. Our installed rebuilt 1600 cc engine warranty was 12 months/12,000 miles which included all maintaince including a major service at 12,000 miles. Maybe five in one hundred bothered to come back for the 500 mile service. One in five for the 2,000 mile oil change. At one time we were averaging 2-3 engines a day so there were a lot of non/ undermaintained engines out there.

Howdy all, Perrib when you coming to the mountains. I just saw your post and engines. Do you do the engines yourself? I like many others am playing catch up with working on my engine. One of the things I either should have done or have taught to me is the tune up and the A/F ratio. And how to tune duels carbs. I try to read as much as I can about each item but sometimes hands on and seeing it happen open the mind unlike anything else. I have been working out a dash and center console for the rail for my gauges. Space is tight so allot of measuring with me both in the car and out to see what will fit and not block anything I need to either see or reach. And I have a crazy idea of taking and cutting up a diamond plate tool box for the main componants of the dash and console, and useing small aluminum angle to hold it all together.

My fronts brakes should be here today. Neighbor has them at his house.

Got the engine finished and firing strong, put in a stereo AND realized that mixing "great stuff" with the proper proportion of gasoline creates a highly combustable pissed off jello like napalm. Add a 2nd degree flash burn to the scorecard.
