Worked on repairing some serious damage to my left rear fender.

Some time back, the car was parked at the side of the road in front of my house during the afternoon. It came time to go to fetch my wife from her bus home from work. I got into the car and drove off down the street. A few houses down, the left rear corner suddenly dropped and the wheel passed me on the street. I got it over to the side of the street and parked. Then went and got the wheel, then back traced for the lug nuts. I found all 4 of them within 15' of each other. They had ALL come out together!

I normally park my vehicles in my back yard, behind a locked gate. My son and I were inside the house with the windows open and the car within 20' of the front of the house. But someone loosened the wheel. It was malicious mischief, not attempted theft, as they had all of the lugs evenly backed out. That was rendered obvious by them all falling on the street close together.

It broke the fender virtually in 1/2 near the top, with only the mounting flange not broken. At the time, I quick repaired it by drilling 1/4" holes along the break and using zip ties to "stitch" the fender together.

So I finally took the zip ties out and am fiberglassing the fender together. I'm applying 4 layers of glass to the inside and 4 more to the outside. The overlap is 3" each side of the break. Plus a 6" strip of 2 layers inside and out on the outer and flange edges. The outer edge has the glass cloth wrapped around the edge. I found that right at the break, the outer lip on the fender was only about 1/16" thick, but down forward and further back, the glass is between 3/16-1/4" thick. So I'm adding a little extra glass in the break area of the lip to strengthen it.

I would post the pictures I've taken, but the battery on my camera died and it won't talk to the computer. I wanted to take more pics, but it died in the middle of the repair. Ain't technology fun?

I'm not sure the remaining custom blend paint from when I painted the car in 08 will be usable for re-painting the fender. If not, I may paint the fenders in a complimentary color. The body is a pale gray, the cagework is bright blue. The engine tin and suspension pieces are dark silver-gray metallic. I have another pair of rear fenders of the same style which are painted metallic blue. That would probably look pretty nice, but they were made with very narrow flanges with some of the bolt holes only 1/2 holes in the edge of the flange, and that's why they came off the car they had been on. I would want to add glass to the flanges before installing them. that would involve wrapping the new glass up onto the upper surface of the fenders and would wreck the existing paint. So I probably won't do that. The color may look good though and maybe I could get some Duplicolor rattle can in a similar color. I COULD maybe make some tabs out of 16 gauge steel or aluminum to bolt to the fenders at the body bolt holes. And maybe even raise the fenders on the body?????...hmmmm

Still busting rear on getting my car to run were I'm happy with it. Last thing to replace is the pickup coil in the distributer and then the ignition will be like new other than the plug wires...Once that is done back to tuneing the carb.

It has been a sad week. Had to put the bug in storage for the winter.
We sold the house and living in the RV for the next 9 to 10 months.
The trailer court will not let me have more than the 2 cars so into storage it went Sad

Been doing some small things to the Thing. I added a pair of Hella 500ff lights in the front and some bright backup lights in the back. Used an extra left side dash panel to mount a tach and the 2 new sand seal switches for the lights.

Installing 6 point cage ,what fun. Wifey says you should have painted it before you installed it, but that would have been to easy..

I did a little more work on my fender.

Yesterday was my birthday, and my wife decided that I should go to the movies and see Rush. Awesome movie for anyone with an interest in road racing. My parents met at a sports car race and I grew up involved in it before switching to offroad racing as a young man. But that prevented further fender work.

Then today, I had to make room for a gift from my brother and his wife. A tent trailer...It's not pristine. It needs a little work. But the price is good. I've been thinking for some time about building an offroadable teardrop to tow behind the Baja or my Toyota pre-runner. This will tow behind the Toyota, but it's too big for the Baja.

Found 3 of 4 bolts loose on the front beam! Tried to balance my front tires a little bit, seems to have helped. Got a small amount of things to do for this weekend and it should be ready enough.

Been working on my BN4 gas heater. The exhaust is pretty smoky right now so I need to clean the glow plug and some of the internals. I believe I'll mount the gas heater up front and relocate the fuel tank behind the rear seat. I'll build an enclosure for it and have fresh air vents for ventilation.. maybe even a fan?

Also trying to figure out why my generator light won't go off. I've ordered bushings for my generator and will replace as soon as I get them.

Also continuing to paint.. Have many design ideas to go along with the "Yeti" Theme.

Came across a set of dual webers in great condition on craigslist for 200. Took a 2 hour round trip drive to pick them up. Getting ready to pick up some gaskets and a few parts and clean em up good.

Today I finished removing the the old body from the pan. I found a guy on craigslist to haul away all the old sheet metal for free.
