2.3 from the turbocoupe is probably the best for horsepower. and 2.3 will last it seems forever if N/A stock or even pumped up a lil. I was thinkin one of the new 8 sparkplug ones with EFI. I have been researchin alot since I have 2 pinto adapters and no motors. Crying or Very sad

Im not sure how much a 2.3 should cost where you are located. Around here they usually run around free to $200. It also depends on what you are looking for also. if you are looking for an old carbed 2.3, efi or efi turbo. I would say that if you go turbo you will probably want to run a bus trans or a built type 1. OOne problem you have to look for with 2.3s (mostly on turbo models though) are cracked heads, so plan on spending money on that. Also valve guides wear out pretty fast and will most likely require some work, (most important on a turbo engine). The good thing about the turbo engines are they come from the factory with forged pistons and molly rings, so even if you find a hi milage engine it could still be in good shape. Even if you dont use the turbo parts the pistons are good for n/a if you mill the head, to get around 10-1 comression. later model 2.3/2.5s also came with roller cams and rockers, if the engine has dual plugs its a roller cam, and most rangers 88 and up were roller cams. these cams are good for reliability, but not very good for performance. A good cam (roller)I have found is called an a-237 made by crane or ford motorsports, this cam works good in a turbo engine, even though teh lobe seperation is a little tight, it still works good, and works freakin good in a N/A engine with atleast 9.5-1

Ok if you get a turbo engine look for one from a 87-88 ford turbocoupe, get the computer(LA sereis computer from a 5spd) and the VAM( weird looking box with a flap inside in front of turbo). The 87-88 turbo coupe also has an ihi turbo (much smaller than the usual .48 or .63 t-3 turbos on other models) this turbo will spool very quickly and will make enough power to blow up most vw trans. IF you turn the boost up, run a 3" down pipe, ported exhaust manifold( I sell them) you should be able to run 220hp to the wheels. add a cam and head work and figur another 20p or so, add a larger turbo t-3 figure on making around 260rwhp, add a t3/t4 hybrid or a hx35 holset bigger intercooler and a megasquirt figure on making 300 to 350rwhp or more. Anyways the 220hp combo should be doable for around $500 to $750 hp. If you need any help with 2.3 stuf you can PM me.

Oh saltyslug, if you decide to sell one of those adapters let me know, i would love to have one.

^^^madman is da man when it comes to da ford 2.3 for sure. I checked out the turbo 2.3 ford site man, good stuff and thanks for the info. I know my neighbor wants one of them and thats why I'm searchin for one right now. he has a rail with a bus engine and built bus trans. he wants to yard the bus engine and put a 2.3 in. I will be doing all the work but he is a ford nut and when I told him about it he was pretty excited.

how hard is the harness to wire up just the factory ecu outside the stock car? I mean I did mine on my 300zx nissan engine so I have a general idea(plus I was a instlaller for 12 years). I seen crashes setup online also and it didn't look too bad. I see the ford guys are doing pretty good with the stock ecu on the turbo models? 300+hp

In the neighbors rail I am probably going N/A, I am sure it will be more powah than the bus with dual weber 40s, plus the economey and reliabilty cant be beat.

thanks again for the info.

its pretty easy as far as wiring goes, I will see if I can find any of my old wiring diagrams. You should be able to eire one in a couple hours if you have all the connectors and stuff. If you want to find a mostly complete harnes that doesnt have much extra crap, look for a harness out of a merkur xr4ti. the engine harness and te cars electrical harness are seperat unlike any of the other 2.3t cars.

As for the sandrail i think i would look for an earlier 2.0 from the early pintos. that engine is lighter and revs better than the 2.3. it still uses the same bellhousing bolt pattern. the 2.0 is a screamin little engien in na form with parts from esslinger.

The funny thing is, that most of the time you can build a turbo efi 2.3 for less than most people pay to get there n/a 2.3 ready to run. N/a you need a header, and a holley carb and carb adapter, unless you buy the stuff used, its close to the 2.3t.

I don't mean to sound like an idiot, but what is N/A?

I used to drive a 78 pinto with, I guess, a 2.0. it was a screamer. I also had an 84 ranger that was a dog, but had the same motor, or at least the heads were interchangeable.

I really used to shock my friend with that little pony. I might be interested in putting one in a Baja someday. Thanks for the info.

Sorry, N/A means normaly asperated. Your pinto should have been a 2.3 in 78 and your ranger cold have been a later 2.0 (debored 2.3) or 2.3 but they sure sucked the power out of them in the 80s.
I think they stoped using the older style 2.0 in 74 ,they were a different engine completely except for the bellhousing bolt pattern.

oh i also forgot that most of the mid 80s carbed 2.0 rangers had small round intake ports, while the early ones had large oval ports, and the later efi single plug heads have a D shaped port.

hey madman a guy just mailed me back about a 2.0 for $100 if I pull it. he said its in the car running right now so I can drive it first. I think I am gonna get it and just sell the complete setup with the steel adapter I have. If I get the price I want complete I will probably sell the other adapter(pinto beans) for what I got it for to ya. I am not sure yet though.

I talked to my neighbor a few minutes ago and perswaded him to get a new adapter and the complete clutch setup. for his bad ass rail. hes got the dough to run whatever and new always looks good. thats why I want a later efi unit to put in for him.

No problem, if you decide to keep it or sell it. I would be thankfull though. IF you can get a 2.0 for $100 I say do it! That is a sweet littl engine, I dont think you will be dissapointed at all.

Cool, whenhe gets ready to start making a litle more power let me know and I can port the exhaust manifold for you, (much cheaper than a header) Also look at bying a gillis valve or some other maual boost controler. When wiring run the premium fuel switch to be on all the time. Also you will probably want to run an aftermarket fuel pump, the stock intank one is too small for the stock engine. Another thing that might make te engine or turbo fit better is that the exhast manifold can be flipped upside down, this will move the turbo to the front of the engine or the rear of the rail, and fid someone that can make a 3" down pipe from the turbo elbow, and try to have it atleast 18" long.

this guy will probably leave it stock, maybe turn up the boost a little and a BIG supertrapp.

Can the premium switch be retained? he has kids that might drive it and being able to turn down the boost with a switch would be nice. I read on the turbo2.3 forum that it lowers the boost when switched??

I will be doing ALL the work as far as exhaust and installing.Crashes wiring diagram on blindchicken racing looks really simple. I hope it goes smoothly.

How much do you charge for the porting the mani?
