I've seen the called nerf bars and tree bars. The ones available for our 4x4 are called rock sliders.

I've seen two styles for the VW with one having a higher supporting bar (mounting behind the door frame).

I'm just wondering if these "bars" will actually help out on the trail or just get in the way.

i think they are a waste of money if you just use your baja in the desert, i can see where they would be of some use if you lived in a wooded area. just my opinion... Cool

Some people say they use them for steps. Others say they keep brush etc from catching the rear wheels and possibly bending a trailing arm....but I would imagine 90% are just for looks Rolling Eyes

Its mostly a looks issue, but they do have a practical purpose. Keeping rocks and trees away is an important feature, but also, My buddy has his braced enough to use as a jacking point, also wide enough to carry his trail tools and also another small container of gass. You could strap anything on them.

So they can be very usefull, but most people like the look

I use mine for a toilet seat. Also a great place to stand to get the spare off the roof. and also help keep people from putting door dings into your car. But mine stick out a little farther than stock.

I use mine a lot for what they are intended for. Of course I live where there are a lot of those tall, green things called trees. You might have heard of them but having been to AZ, I can't imagine you have ever actually seen one.

Make sure to use good side bars, cheapo ones will make it hard for your door to open if you get high centered. Also they work good to hold my gas can and work great if you have to push or pull it for some reason. This style really keeps the rocks and trees(cacti) away. I can jump up and down on mine and thats the way you want them.

the ones at BAP for $50 are very light, feel like aluminum. I bought some at bugarama couple years ago, any body have a link or details to this year bugarama? Neway, the first time I went out I high centered on top of a hill. the nerf bars were pushed up and dented my bodu panels on both sides. I like the way they look, but so far functionaly I don't like them. I'm hoping once i get running again they'll prove to keep the bushes from pinstriping my bug.

try mounting the uprights through the body and tying to the roll cage, if you have one. If no roll cage, weld a larger area plate onto the upright and double plating it. This will spread the load, but not prevent damage in hard hits.
