Hey there folks.

I've been wanting a Baja for the last few years and just recently it seems a potential one has fallen into my hands. A friend of mine gave me (under pressure from his wife) a 1968 Type1 VW Bug. He had wanted to restore it and I want to turn it into a monster.

So I have a few questions...

The bug is a manual with decent pans and a newly rebuilt 1600cc motor.

Other then a baja kit / roll cage / front & back bumpers what do your recomend getting?

Keep in mind that I don't plan on making this thing mega hard core. I'd like it to be a mean looking on road vehicle that can go off road at the drop of a hat.

Do I need a lift kit? What size wheels and tires should I look at getting? What kind of upgrades should I do to the motor/transmission/suspension? What are common problems with the 68 that I should look out for?

Also I’m in the Midwest. There aren’t a crap ton of bugs out here let alone baja shops.
There’s a VW club but they aren’t exactly sympathetic to my cause. Chances are I’ll do most of my shopping online so who should I buy from and who should I avoid like the plague?

Thanks for your help and any information you guys can provide.

fisrt of all, WELCOME to the BAJA life Wink

you could do the following:

body lift
31" tires in the rear
215/80/15 tires in the front
coil over shocks
remove the stops from the front tortion (if applicable)-gives more front travel
light bar - roof
7 piece fiberglass body kit
basic maintenance

please feel free to shop our good associates at : www.chirco.com
there is a Q&A forum there also : www.chircoestore.com/c.../index.php
