I have a fuel injected 2180 Baja bug that is widened and stretched. Basically a class 5 racer (I think). I'm slowly getting it back I shape after I rescued it a few years ago. I just got it running after a new trans build and it developed a noise. It gets louder as you accelerate and gets almost undetectable when clutch is in. I figured it was the throw out bearing so o pulled the motor. The bearing a dry but I'm not convinced that will cure my problem but now I have another problem to address. My cluch is on its last leg. I have a stage 4 Kennedy set up. I plan on doing using my big for what it was made for so what clich and pressure plate combo should I go with. I might even try the sand drags. Some say stage 1 or 2 so you can get some slippage. I'm not sure I need some input. HELP!

If the noise goes away when you step on the clutch you have a problem in the transaxle. I believe the Stage 4 is a dual disc set up. It is on or off slipping it burns the discs. Since your heavy and probably are making more hp a Stage two and a kush loc disc might be better for you. Of you running a lot of cam (Engle 130 or larger use a Stage 3. I'd use the dual disc for the sand drags.

You are probably still running a 200mm flywheel.. I run a V6 and went to a 228mm flywheel with a stage 1 running a stock type 4 disc.. been in the car for over 12years. works awesome.

I run a stage 2 pressure plate on a 2liter turbo Subaru, 4years no issues. J use to have a stage 4 and it was miserable out on the trail

2180 with a bus transaxle. 33" super diggers and I race the car. Stage 2 with a rigid disc. You need a little bit of slip or it's just going to grenade your transaxle all the time

you should be fine with a stage 2 guy s tend to grossly overestimate how much hp they are making stage 4 is overkill on a 2180

If you read the Kennedy tag stage 4 is for v8 power, I agree with the better to slip a clutch then grenade a cv or transaxle

Thank you for all your help. Sorry I haven't replied but my phone was stollen and I had. I way to even read your posts. I do agree the stage 4 is over kill it that's what it came with. I went with a stage 3 Kennedy and and a duel compound from CB Performance. I agree about the small amount of slipping to save the trans. I had the trans built up by Scott in Sanger Ca. I forgot the name of his fab shop but he is highly recommended by the drag racing scene but you can never be to careful. Claud at CB said when he built it it had a stage 2 but it slipped when drove hard and when he side stepped the clutch. I went with the duel compound clutch because it has spring action built right in to it and that's why I went with the stage but now I'm leaning toward the stage 2. also bought a duel weight flywheel from CB. Ok now I thought I was ready to put it all together but when I pulled the bell housing off I found the ring gear demolished. This is why I was thinking the stage 2 but I'm not convinced it was driver error because I only have about 2000 miles on the rebuild and I've been babying on the road and only took it off-road in the mud 2 times. Like I mentioned it gad a noise it it that got worse over time but I thought it was the throw out bearing. I have never drove a bug that was solid mounted motor and trans and when I asked a shop in porterville ca he said the noise was due to the solid mount. Now in hind site I wish I would of went with my gut feeling and took it back to Scott to let him listen to it. Also when he rebuilt it he found that the main bearing for the drive pinion was out. I took Scott the trans and installed it myself and have no fought it was nothing he did because he is the best around. So I'm confused I thought that when a differential makes noise when you give it throttle and no noise when you let off is due to not aligning the pion to ring gear properly. Like I said I don't doubt Scott so I'm leaning toward something else wrong like a bent shaft that he didn't catch. I haven't taken it back to him yet so I would appreciate some input on my problem so I don't sound like a idiot when I take it back. Again sorry for not responding till now but I'm lost without my iPhone and I finally borrowed a phone to check my blog

Sorry had to reread the post....... you did mention wanting to do sand drags and that can tear up a ring but we will take you at you're word. Under normal use you should never kill a ring that quick.

Sorry if I'm rambling on and unclear. I want to run the local sand drag circuit someday but I'm just getting the car road worthy. Like I said it was set out in the. One yard when I got it and I am bringing it back to life. After doing the trans I had an operation and had to take a 2 year break and am just getting back to it because my Silverado went down. Out of necessity I am making the Baja my daily driver so I've. Even taking it easy on the beast that's why I'm confused about the ring gear.

throw out bearings make noise when you step on clutch not driving down the road if adjusted correctly and backing off the pressure plate foot off clutch. Some ring gears will howl a little on the coast side if they have a lot of miles on them, if you were getting a howl, whine, growl or vibration under load then something was not happy. Which could've been bearing or ring pattern and you answered that, if it only made noise in one gear that is sell explanatory. And that in a nutshell is tranny noise diagnostics 101.....
being you said you pulled bell housing to check I take it is a bus tranny.? Yes?
The carrier bearings have 75ft lbs preload behind the cv cup that should be backed off before you pull bellhousing or you could damage case or lose some of that preload when the bell housing is removed
