I bought this 1963 bug about 2 years ago (december 2014) sight unseen. Drove 2 hours away to go pick it up. Was not disappointed by the quality of the cage work the guy had done to the car and it was the perfect foundation for my project.

Now i never realized how off that cage was.. i ended up cutting out some of the tubing around where the seats went because the door bars were too narrow even for narrow seats and the harness bar was too far forward to give myself enough leg room.

It also had a bone stock link pin front end on it. First to go was the stock front end and swapped it out to an adjustable widened link pin front end i had from my first buggy.

And thats how it sat for quite some time. Until roughly 4 months ago i was able to finally put some money into it.

as you can see i had a good place to start but a ton of work had to be done.

stock ball joint front end
a cage that was too narrow to even fit seats in the car
absolutely nothing in the rear except a rigged caster to move the car on

these are pictures from when i bought it 2 years ago and its come a long way since

the first step was getting the widened beam i had laying around to fit the front of the car

[img][/img]

in order to get it to fit i had to clearance out the front of the beam so 2 rectangles were cut into the front and i made 2 more cuts in the top to allow the steering gear to fit and allow the tie rods to have room to move

once it was mounted i realized how wide this car was going to be

This is how it sat for a very long time. I got it to that point roughly 2 years ago and i have now owned it for about 2 and a half years. In that time i moved 2 different times to where i am currently staying where i managed to get myself half of a garage with a friend of mine. I was then able to begin working on it finally after letting the poor thing sit for so long. So last summer i was able to get some more progress started on it.

First on the list was to get my seats to fit properly so i cut out the bars that the other guy made to make room.

[img][/img]

I then decided on this type of configuration for my rear cage work to support the harnesses as well provide room to bring the seats back because the original tube was way too far forward even for me and i'm only 5'8 on a good day

My next step was to get the steering figured out because it was a real pain to get this thing moved around for cleaning and whatever i needed when i didnt even have a steering wheel.

My next task was to run some tubes to the beam and make myself a front bumper to give myself a way to mount my hood to the car

[img][/img]

Here you can see that caster i had to use. Not the best thing ever and over time it ended up folding under and became useless but for the time it worked it sure was a life saver

I then took some time away to put some money aside while i decided on a powerplant for this thing. I originally had a subaru 2.2 from a 96 impreza but i was missing some major components like the computer and harness and for whatever reason it was a really hard computer to find so i ended up selling the motor to someone for them to use as mockup.

I next debated several different options for an engine. I first thought of an older D or B series honda motor however they rotate the wrong way to be used on a VW transmission and i didnt wanna flip the ring and pin around and potentially waste a transmission just because i wanted to save a few bucks on an engine. I then considered a K series honda motor but they are very expensive to buy until a friend of mine mentioned that J series motors sell for decent prices. So i found a complete donor car to use on craigslist and had a direction to go. A 97 acura 3.0cl was the donor car i found and it was perfect for me. Unfortunately the car was not running when i picked it up...

but after alot of work and cutting some of the front of the car out of my way i finally had my engine

It didnt take long for me to figure out why it wasnt running when i got it. The guy let the timing belt go and thought he could just replace the belt and it would be fine. Well as it turns out he managed to just BARELY bend a valve on all 6 cylinders. There was only one small mark on one piston from the damage. So long story short it needed new heads and a timing belt but for an engine with 100k miles on it its in great shape. everything looked great while i had it apart

[img][/img]

And while i was at it i decided i would get rid of some of the extra emissions stuff i didnt need and get the harness redone for my needs

Then it was time to spend more money again so i could get the engine mounted

[img][/img]

picked up the kennedy adapter to go to my 002 transmission. stock type clutch disc is gonna be held on with a stage 1 pressure plate. should be able to drive it reasonably with that setup at least thats what i've been told.

next up was a combination of getting the transmission/engine and using some jigs to get my trailing arms mounted. since this car is a 63 i didnt have the luxury of already having a place to mount my trailing arms to.

next on the list was making a place to mount the engine to but i wanted to incorporate a rear bumper with this design as well and this is what i came up with
