So this is the new father/son project that I hope get running/driving for a maximum budget of $750, I spent $500 today buying this off Craig's and I'm hoping to finish it for another $250. First steps are teaching the boy how to check and repack wheel bearings and cv's then brake system and so forth.
I'll post up pics and part costs as it comes together, I plan on stealing as much stuff as I can from my friends spare parts and insulting people just enough on Craig's not to make enemies lol, should be fun

Just an update now that we are starting this build, I told the kid we could build it in time for his birth day on the 27th and I'll take him and his buddy out to play with it that weekend. Pulled the motor becuase it had to come out to check everything and I'm going to borrow a SP 1600 till I have more time to source everything for his, end play is good so I'm going to pull heads and see how fresh it is and maybe I'll find some DP heads and build a proper motor. I plan on going through cv's, bearings, gear oil and rear brakes this weekend since the motor is turn key, after I have drive train the wiring and plumbing is a breeze

Got it running and it shifts through the gears, spent about $58 in various parts and fluids to get this far. Ive been pretty lucky digging through a few garages for parts and I'm not done yet.

Cleaned and packed the cv's, I'll reinstall after the wheel bearings and brakes get checked out, new boots woohoo. The rear torsion is a +6" so I'm running 19.25" axles with stock boxed arms.

another garage score, exhaust and belt I'll use now and save the DP heads for a later upgrade since they need work. Have the clutch working, throttle cable run but needs couple mounting points welded in and the rear brakes plumbed waiting on wheel cylinder inspection before I fill master

And the work continues

Have the exhaust on and belt

Bending up the brake lines and fitting it all together. Going to cut the flat strap out use angle iron on seat base

Masters are in, still need a tab for throttle cable

Typical VW brakes... I think the spider webs come factory

installed axles new wheel cylinders and serviced bearings today and she's running of the fuel tank

Started roughing in the wiring, used 8' of 7 wire to make things easier. It starts off the key now. Spent another $75 today for wiring, switch, wheel cylinders and a few more small pieces, $128 total

^^^click play^^^This was yesterday just after installing switch

Cut the old seat mounts out and made up the tabs for brakes lines and throttle cable today. She has a date with the electric glue gun tomorrow so should have seats and belts when I'm done

Who needs seat mounts anyways.. Love the idea of "glue gun-ing" the seats and seat belts in... Keep it simple.
