As some of you know VW made 4 wheel drive bugs for military usage back in WW2. I heard there was 91 or so of them made. Is it possible to find the blueprints so to say on how they were made? NOt in the near future, but one day, I would like to build one, but not by putting a bug body on a different chasis and not a tube chasis, not-uh none of that. I wanna do it the way VW did it way back when, or something similar.

I don't know if it would help but it might give you some ideas. VW of Mexico made an air-cooled "Front Wheel Drive" vehicle called the Hormiga (the Ant) and Porsche made some 4x4 vehicles for the Ralley crowd based on the 911. Google might turn up some technical drawings.

Good luck!

I think I read about the 4 wheel drive bugs in the Jeff Hibbard or Idiot guide. I do not recall for sure. I did find a lil more info on them while searching the web. wikipedia.org might help, i do not have time right now to check, but I kow they have great general VW bug info.

Think I got my answer on how it was done, and I'm not too thrilled. I was expecting something different. I found this going to wikipedia.org real quick and typing vw beetle and carefully reading, not skimming, the article. Here is what I found"

the Kommandeurwagen; a Beetle body mounted on the 4WD Kübelwagen chassis. A total of 669 Kommandeurwagens were produced until 1945, when all production was halted due to heavy damage sustained in Allied air raids on the factory. Much of the essential equipment had already been moved to underground bunkers for protection, allowing production to resume quickly once hostilities had ended.

I did not want to mount the body on another chassis like some people do, but, oh well.

How much different can the Kübelwagen chassis be? Wasn't it basically the ancestor of the modern VW Thing? If VW managed to get 4x4 under the Kübelwagen it would seem that the same technology could be used on a beetle chassis.

8/1997, Jeff Tickner writes:
Actually a very few 4WD Kubelwagen were produced from 1944-45. They were 4WD in first gear only. They were based on the design of the Schwimwagen, the amphibious version of the Kublewagen. It has a prop that swings down and connects directly to the crank via a square-drive socket. The Schwimwagen was made 4WD in first gear so you could get out of the water. VW also made the Komanderwagen, which was sort of a jacked-up VW Beetle, also 4WD in first gear in very limited quantities. Hot VWs Magazine has covered these vehicles, including a collection in Norway that consists of one of each of these rare vehicles (although the Kubelwagen is not 4WD).

I think the correct spelling would be Kommandeurwagen.

A lot of stuff turned up on google but needs translation.

interesting. I also read though that the only remaining Kommanderwagen (spelling?) resdes in a Wolfsburg (i thin it was Wolfsburg) museum. I'll look it up some more. That is very true about the Kubelwagen chass being not too different from the bettle chassis.

Also come in a 6x6 version.
This is like the VW of 4x4's and it can walk all ove most jeeps off road. it's smaller than a unimog.

Well I remember reading and seeing pics of a VW Beetle that someone was converting to 4wd.But it was a street car,I think.
I thought it was here Volks-Swap.
But to be honest it's been a couple years.
Hmmm Haven't found it there yet.
GAAAAAH!
I know it's gotta be one of these in thier other link section,I swear!
Ricola-Racing
I can't remember where they got the front Diff and Spindles, but it was an A-Arm suspension, and had a modified nosecone for the drive line to exit from.Simular (I think) to the 4WD WWII VW's.
