Remove the pulley and see if it appears to have threads where the pulley enters the case. These are there to force the oil back in, also the oil slinger needs to be there. If the area behind the pulley is smooth it is for a sand seal. Either install a seal or a stock pulley. If it a stock engine make sure the breather is open. Larger engines need more breathing. If oil is blowing out the ring seal is bad.

Thanks for the tip, will be my weekend project since I went thru everything else

Hey what's up guys, I would love some electrical help with my 1969 baja. I kind of have all the electrical torn out and a loom ready to go in with everything where it "should" be... but some of my beetle is 12v and some is 6v. With a electric fuel pump and some lights up top. I just look at it and realize I have no idea what I'm doing.

69 should all be 12v. What is 6v in the cr?

I need to sell my '64 baja bug. It has been with me for 15 years, but I need some cash. I got it to start, but because it sat for so many years it is running rough. I drained the laquer from the gas tank, replaced the flexible fuel line (most of it) put in new points and replaced some cracked wiring.
The exhaust had a crack in one of the tubes, so water got in and made rust inside, it actually blows rust colored smoke out of the exhaust.
It does have a vacuum leak I believe, an inlet on the carb pedestal. 34 pict carb on it. If I recall, there was a rubber boot that went over that, but since BAP parts on Broadway closed down, I'm not sure where to get VW parts on the east side.

I hate to tow this in to Dougs Bugs and Bunnies and pay shop fees, but I think it'll sell easier if it is running right. Plus I might want to drive it one last time before letting it go.
I'll probably bleed the brakes this weekend.

Anyone out in the east valley good with tuning carbs?

Anybody here familiar with the ecotec swap? 16 year old kid here who has a little bit of a clue of what he's doing. I have a 68 Baja with a SP 1300 that I feel is on its way out. If someone could tell/inform me what's needed and maybe help, I'm willing to pay. I live in the east valley, and I'm located literally 5 minutes away from Bulldog Canyon which I see is quite popular here.

So I am new to the VW Baja world. I actually have a 69 Baja Bug and a 70ish VW sand rail. I live in the surprise area. The sand rail, run decent but at full throttle it kind of dies out. My first thought is the fuel pump is going bad and a full throttle it does not pump enough. Any other thoughts or a simple way to check that?

Also if anyone would want to come over and tell me what I actually have. I got these two because someone owed me money and taking them was the only way I figured I would get anything out of it.

So the baja bug I got the brakes suck on it. So I found a kit to convert the front to disc. How hard is it to convert the front to disk and rebuild everything on the drums in the back?

disc brake conversion is simpler than rebuilding drums. get lifted spindles while your at it.
