The stock gear box cant take heavy off road use... you would need to upgrade the gear box before you install this.

I think you miss understood me... the stock VW Bug steering box will break when used in heavy off road use. I have broken many of them. if you put the Power steering unit up to a stock VW steering box it will destroy it when you off road ...

on a street car/baja it should work just fine.

Ya ya that's what they say about bus boxes and water pumpers, don't be such a negative Nancy. Most people that would tackle this upgrade run racks and the rest are big boys

I like the idea. I already have a HD rack and pinion box on my 5 car. If I can add this and get rid of all the Charlyn stuff, the car would be more streetable.

Sweet link, this is the stuff people need to see so they know there's options . I haven't decided when but I definitely will be going to electric to see if it gets rid of the jerky feedback the stabilizer doesn't catch. There was a guy couple years back selling units like these on Craig's for around $500 but I think the availability is catching up and making them more affordable everyday

the way I fixed my steering issues on the street ... I put a valve to bleed off the pressure.. I can tune my PS for the street all the way to off... then when I hit dirt I turn it all the way up from the driver seat. I will post some photos. try it out on your car .. you will love it!!!

The feed line come in on the right ... the lines coming out of the top go to the valve. the tee goes Into the input side of power steering.

.
Spoke with a fabricator in Tucson. He has done this conversion and it holds up well as long as you have a HD rack and pinion unit installed. Additionally, a new replacement part for it is only $80 from AutoZone.

Beats dealing with hydraulic lines and stuff. Don't know if it will make it into mainstream racing, but it sure would work for most of our cars.
