Hey I was searching for parts and prices for the 66 Baja I plan on buying and I want to build it to have better suspension for the mountain roads out here. So if possible I would love a parts list so I know what to buy. This is my first vw bug and baja.

Ya know, that's an AWFULLY WIDE OPEN question. it's kinda like asking a bunch of strangers for a grocery list. I've been around Baja Bugs for over 50 years now, In all that time, and among the literally hundreds of thousands of Baja Bugs I've seen, no 2 have been the same. We can make lots of suggestions, but each of us will have his own thoughts on how to build a Baja.

Pictures of the Baja you are buying will help us understand what is there already and what the car really NEEDS. It's good that you've indicated your location in your ID. That helps us help you. So we know you're talking about driving in the Rocky Mountains. But you haven't specified whether you're thinking of graded dirt roads, gravel roads, paved mountain roads, designated 4wd trails, or what. You haven't said go fast over whoops, or crawl over boulders, or blaze through deep powder snow. You have sort of stepped up to the ticket counter at the airport and said you want a ticket, but not where you want to go or how much you want to spend.

Give us a little more to work with and we'll be happy to help you spend your money.

I apologize that I didn't specify fully as I wrote this before I gave in to the urge to poop. I need a set up that will perform on Pikes Peak. (Paved road) as well as dirt roads designated for 4WD only vehicles. I want to be able to power through the trails, I do not want a rock crawler. Plus the boulders out here are on average 15 times bigger than the car is.

"I wrote this before I gave in to the urge to poop"
That's a familiar situation... Rolling Eyes

Now to the roads you want your car to deal with:
- "Pikes Peak. (Paved road)" OK...That's one sort of Baja Bug. You want it to handle corners on pavement. Low ride height, short wheel travel, stiff springs, firm shocks, IRS, sway bars front and rear, wide wheels and low profile snow rated pavement tires.

- "dirt roads designated for 4WD only vehicles" Hm... Confused Different sort of Baja. Low gear ratio, tall tires on medium width wheels, medium to long wheel travel, soft but long shocks, soft springs, swingaxle OK, but IRS better, stock to longer wheelbase through long arms on rear and possibly beam moved forward to accommodate long front arms,

But then you say:
- "I do not want a rock crawler" .....Double Hmmmmm.... Confused

Tough compromise!

Maybe a car like this one from the gallery:

[img]http://www.azbaja.com/coppermine/displayimagepopup/pid=266/fullsize=1.html[/img]

Or this one:
[img]http://www.azbaja.com/coppermine/displayimagepopup/pid=951/fullsize=1.html[/img]

[img]http://www.azbaja.com/coppermine/displayimagepopup/pid=950/fullsize=1.html[/img]

- Stock to +1 IRS arms,
- Link pin front with stock width beam and taller towers with adjusters
- start with KYB Gas-A-Just shocks, maybe later upgrade to Bilstein or Fox/King/etc. - 8" long fronts/12" rears
- 4.12 ratio 69-72 Type 1 IRS gearbox or lower geared 002/091 bus box
- 3.5-5" wide front wheels with tires up to 235-75x15
- 6-8" wide rear wheels with tires up to 31 x 10.5 All Terrain
- Roll cage will help chassis rigidity for all of the above activities as well as improving safety, and a place to mount the rear shocks.
- Keep the heater boxes and all vents, and seal off the front compartment. Colorado gets a mite cool at times.
- Engine could start out as a pretty stock 1600 and upgrade as you feel the need and have the $$.

It's bothersome that those images from the gallery won't display. It would be nice if they would. I'm using the correct BB code which is set to "allow".
