I would like to build a Baja bug but is it practical for me at all? Where I live the coldest I gets is like -50c but that's not very common would I freeze to death in a Baja bug? Ive read a little about them have heaters that fill the cab with carbonmonoxide. Also what modifications should I make for a daily driven bug that I can have fun with on the weekend.

I can't speak from experience with -90°F weather. I'm inclined to doubt much of anything is going to be moving around in that weather. But I've driven my Baja Bug in -6°F here in the SoCal desert using standard 1960s style Bug heater boxes in my '58. MY uncle used to drive his stock Bug in -60°F to get to his bulldozer to clear snow off roads in the Colorado Rockies back in the late '60s/early '70s.

I would think you would want to add some pretty serious thermal insulation to any vehicle to be used in that sort of weather.

Carbon monoxide gets in through the stock Bug heater if you have an exhaust leak near the engine cooling fan intake. Or if you let the engine run while parked inside a garage.

A better choice for heater in a Bug in such areas would be a gasoline heater. It draws gas from the gas tank and fits in front of the glove box. They're available through Samba classifieds and other VW vintage parts sources. Not available new though.

the carbon monoxide leaks are due to exhaust leaks .. I have ran stock heater boxes for years... when they leak you can smell them... bugs like to run rich so you will smell it when they start to leak..

I driven Baja in very cold weather ... here is what I think I know...

1) Stock heater boxes will keep you warm. when you are driving..

2) if you are going to build a "beam car" Baja ... plain on sealing up the dash ... everything... I mean everything.. or you will have a cold wet wind when you drive over 50mph. or build a super beetle there dash are sealed already. rain will also be a problem because it will leak in everywhere.

I ran a camping propane heater on the passenger side floor ... it worked well but when I hit a bump it would shoot out a flame at the passenger leg. I kept the window open a bit to keep from killing myself..

3) you must use the heat risers on the carburetor or it wont run well when it gets cold.. you need to study the stock exhaust and come up with something that works like that if you use an aftermarket exhaust system.. (the aftermarket exhaust systems don't heat the intake very well. )

IF I think of anything else I will let you know.
