Heya, gunna try to make this somewhat understandable without rambling on and on,
aircoolers .org is my home forum not alot of baja there =[

Originally a subaru fan, from northern cali, went to school for automotive ( just a community college) then realized smog laws and nothing fun to do with a subaru in ca so i swaped to VW. and this is where the story begins.
i found my first vw in someones back yard, 1974 standard bug runs
no brakes 900$ sold. dont some work get it running ect moved to tahoe for work end up selling it and instant regret. join the army medical discharge, look on CL find the same bug buy it back drive it from cali to louisiana where i currently live. current day:
Living in northern cali all we did was baja bugs simply because the snow and over abundance off dirt roads and places to explore, now that im in louisiana i have a hard time cutting up my bug to baja, not a big fan of class 11 but i would like to do a internal build up untill i move back to CA before i chop it up and all that fun stuff,
Just picked up a side shift 091 ( 6 rib ) for 50$ made my flippin day ;P
still need to locate a subaru engine helping a friend with a 2.2 subaru with duel webber carb conversion in his 84 vw van should make a interesting
outcome, none the less id like to start doing a layout of everything i need to do to prep for a decent well built rig, i know i cant jump to long travel front and rear with full cage off the bat, but id like to square away the small things and start planning on the big things such as finding a front shift nose cone for this 091 or looking into a cable shift setup. ( and if i do go subaru set up id like to raise my trans and engine mounts up 3 inches via machined spacers and i know ill have to notch the inside of the bug but i was planning on inverting the rear shelf for a 45degree mount radiator when i find a engine im happy with.) sometime this week im going to start cleaning up this 091 it came with the bell housing off, and i need to order the gasket, or should i look into getting a diff bell housing for it i read somewhere it needs a longer starter for this one. im honestly lacking info on this transaxle ive read quite a bit but a lot contradicts other threads and so on. anyway, i will continue to do some research and any info yall would like to share i would love to know. =] any questions feel free to ask,
-Jc

Welcome to the site.

You will need adapter plate from Kennedy or other once you settle on the engine. Subaru is kind of pricey IMHO. I have Honda, others love their ecotecs. What ever you choose will be fine.

I think the starter you need is a standard Hi Torque 101

Again, welcome

yea ive spoke with Kennedy engineering a few times, and you are 100% right subaru is expensive. mind me asking what honda engine you are using? i like the idea of Vtec but seems to spin the wrong way and reverse in 4 gears dosnt seem to fun. i have looked into the v6 tempted to track one down, just wiring is a nightmare.

I am in process of going from 3.0 to 3.5.

Lots of guys use the "K" I think for 4 cyl. For 6 cyl 3.0 and 3.5 J works just fine. Wiring is about 800.00 for harness. Junkyard is about 400 / 600 depending on miles. Add in some for 02 sensor, headers, etc and complete honda can be had at 2k or less.

is it a Vtec engine? and they are much more abundant down here so maybe prices will be lower, can only hope ;P most of the yards around here give you the harness when you get a engine along with ecu so if thats the case i might be in luck, if i remeber right hondas 2005 and newer have the "k " engines and they spin clockwise, and all the v6's spin clockwise anyway, it will end up sounding like a lawnmower but ill look into the v6 for sure, and thanks for the info

just make certain the harness is not cut when they pull it. that is about 100 from the 800 rework on the harness costs.

Sorry about the super long time between posts, but i have made alot of progress, well i think i have, apologize for the spelling and grammar in advance i jsut woke up.
Bought a house with a good sized garage, got my bug all apart, got 4 wheel discs and all sorts of stuff, uncut baja wide eye kit for 100$. woo got a adjustable beam with drop spindals, (meh) goin to use them for the timing being since they are the only ones i have that will work with discs.
Got the KEP plate for the subaru. and i picked up a 2001 subaru EJ20TT already have it down to long block and waitin on parts to single turbo it for simplicity, 95% chance im going with outfront motorsports and the stinger ecu set up, unless anyone knows a better way.
just going to be a street bug till i have the $ for all the suspension at once. its not my daily driver so i think it will work out.

Plans: Redoing floor pans, the ones i have are great condition, but im doing 1 1/4 thick wall square tube and 1/10 inch sheet metal pans for strength / skid plate and because i want it to last another 20 years.. once upon a time we where jumping a bug and had a 3'' stump come through the floor and almost right into my crotch....
Planning on mounting the radiator flat over the engine below the back window. Fans and ducts. should work.
any questions feel free to ask, any tips feel free to post, ill be on this thread a lot more now.

been busy,
got ran over by a drunk driver, been dealing with that.

Anyway. got my subaru engine started for mock up,
gotta cut out the back firewall for turbos,
and before anyone points it out yes it is low, very low.
i got a abandoned project from a guy had a lowered pan with all new stuff and i went with that over my beat up original pan,
still going baja, and ill build a decent offroad set up
when i move back to CA, down here in louisiana its kinda pointless for a decent travel bug.
i cut out the front of the bug eye kit for Rad ducting. had to swap to rack and pinion steering, got lots of work to do,
also building roof racks on the side. pretty fun to build.

nothin fancy but it holds 350lbs. 4ft x3.5
