Now that we are getting back into trail riding more, we are looking for headphone sets that are self contained where we can talk to each other without saying huh? And yelling back and forth, especially since we are looking at building a baja to ride along as a pair.

I'd like something self contained much like I see motorcycle riders with. Everything I'm finding (and I suck at searching) is listed as working in conjunction with a 2 way radio and has a wire to plug in, however no radio in the rail and don't plan to install one. We have walkie talkies but frankly can't drive and handle those off road.
I'm more interested in a headset with microphone that is all contained in the head unit to wear so I can stay hands free.

Is there anything made like that? What are you guys using?

look into Motorola CP200... I use them they are about 5watts about 4-20miles they have more accessories than you can think of... including "hands free" ... it is a mic that mounts on your neck. when you speak it will transmit..

My wife just told me we had a set of Motorola's so I pulled them out. Forgot I had these things.

Anyway, tossed them on the charger. They do have a small single plug in the side with a headphone symbol.

Now I just have to find a set of headphones I guess. Any suggestions? Would I be able to make these hands free?

FRS radios are commonly available at Walmart, etc. and use CB band frequencies, but are weaker than regular CB sets and the channel numbers don't correspond to CB sets. They are inexpensive. But actually for short range, they will work fine for intercom or inter-car if traveling together. If they have a headset plug, add a cheap headset for each one and you're cool.

Many people who are more into radios dis FRS units and like above, will tell you to throw them away.

To me, that's like saying to throw away your VW buggy because there are Ferraris and Porsches. But I'll take my Baja Bug over a Ferrari or Porsche any day for driving the roads that start 20 feet from my driveway.

Back before VHF race radios were readily available, in my race buggy I used an intercom set made for motorcycle touring. One belt clip 'radio' with 2 headsets that plugged in. I installed the mics and ear speakers (very similar to what are used for modern race radios) in our helmets. A fresh set of batteries each race and we were good to go.

As you can probably tell, I don't put a huge emphasis on radios or I wouldn't have had to ask that question Very Happy

If it's something that will allow us to talk to each other and hear each other easier with a simple ear piece, then it will probably work for me.

I do however like what Mohaveracer208 posted and that was more inline with what I was thinking. Don't care to drop a grand though, I wouldn't have thought it to be that expensive. That's something I couldn't leave behind in the rail for fear of Mr. Stickyfingers grabbing them.

So I'll probably stick to the cheap stuff, that way if it grows legs I won't be so disappointed.

Check eBay for the Motorola CP 200...

The little radios don't have very much range. I don't like them.
What a couple of my friends do is they buy those small radios and program their big radios to that frequency and give the small little radios to all the kids and send them off.. Then when they want them to come home they use their big radios to transmit the message. Even though the little radios can't transmit back because are not very powerful they can receive the message.. The radio in my car is 45 W UHF if you're using a handheld which is 5 W you could be 20 miles away and still hear my message.. Some of the small little radios bost this long transmit receive distance.. That long-distance only works with line of sight everything you put between the radios cuts their range if you're in a heavy wooded area for tried to transmit through a mountain good luck..

I started off with the Cobra FRS (Family Radio Service) radios and hated them. You can't hear clearly, the stupid beep thing it does when keying the mic, etc. Best for Line of site communication.

Do yourself a favor and chuck it like I said. Get a CB and pay for someone to Tune your SWR (Standing Wave Ratio) to the lowest number possible on the antenna and you'll be happy.

Hands free, just costs more.

I'm just looking to communicate with the people sitting next to me in the rail, or following each other if I ever build a baja. Nothing long distance.

Funny you mention CB's, I have a couple from the 70's we used to use, and even a house counter top version that I've kept around all these years. However mounting one in the rail is out of the question. Takes up too much space plus it would never survive getting wet. Not too sure how it would take extreme dust and getting jarred around on rough terrain either.

I'll see if my wife can find the Motorola CP 200 at a decent price, she's the computer guru. We'll go from there and see how that works.

I thought it was loud and clear. My problem was more that I didn't have anything to keep the mic/speaker pointed at me so I could hear what you said the first time without making you repeat yourself. Maybe get a great Neodymium magnet to hot glue to the back so you can stick it anywhere. There's some amazing magnets for sale. I saw one that was 4" round and 2" thick with a pull force of over 700 Pounds! It was on ebay.

Thanks for letting me use it, I hope it didn't get too dirty. I was eating dust the whole way. Smile
