Anybody ever design or build a lightweight camping trailer that one could tow behind a Baja? I was thinking if you were up in the mountains and had a cool little lightweight trailer with you it would open up all sorts of possibilities.

Yeah.. I was looking at those... and that is definitely one way to go.. another is the kind you build right off a small utility trailer. They have some interesting designs.

do you want one to sleep in or just to carry the camping gear?

Sleep and have a little pull out kitchen like a tear drop.. I've seen setups where there was a tent on top and the supplies below.. leaves the rack on the Baja for carrying cargo.. Oh I dunno.. the possibilities.. endless, endless I say! Fun too!

Will the camping trailer that I built it took a few tries to get it right.. You can't sleep in it but it carries six milk crates into duffel bags and the cooler nicely.. This is what I've ended up with.
1) The top of the trailer comes off and becomes a camping table.
2) it has independent rear suspension that has shocks. Otherwise the trailer is uncontrollable off-road. Just asked Perry he pulled one up to crown King.
3) has a tailgate similar to the 56 Ford..
4) has an extra long tongue that makes it track nicely and easy to backup, this also allows the tow vehicle to get through the ugly before you dragged trailer through it.
5) I built wheel adapters to VW wide five... That way I only need to carry one spare.
6) has a mount for an additional spare tire if needed.
7) has the brackets built all the way around the lid so that I can put state bed sides on it... In the 25 years and I've had it I've never built the state beds sides. But the sure nice for tie downs.
Cool I positioned the rear axle more towards the rear of the trailer so I would need to drag it over anything.

I have a little 4x8 foor open top box trailer that I have been using for years. I moved with it and the Baja. I'm going to put new plywood sides on it and bottom before the river run and place a blue tarp ten over it. Gets me and the girl off the ground and will keeps us more or less covered.

Does not have to be any thing to fancy but it will work for the little times that we need it.

I'm wondering if it would be possible to use the body say from windshield back of a Beetle.. Lighten it up enough to where it would not be too heavy to tow. You could setup the inside for sleeping (would be long enough) and you could use the engine compartment for the kitchen the same way one is setup on a tear drop. Could even add a luggage rack for extra storage. Wonder if it would be possible to make one light enough to haul around?

now here is a subject that is near and dear to my heart, built it a million times in my mind! use thr rear torsion housing off of a VW for the suspension. build a box on top of the rear end. the front half will be gasoline and water with a propane water heater for the shower of course. in the back a 12 volt ice chest on one side and on the other drygoods such as clothes, food, etc. Both on sliders for easy access. to gain access to them the rear gate would swing out , exposing the cooking gally a 2 burner stove and mini sink all led lighted! out front there would be two deep cycle batteries and a little (quiet) two stroke generator. also a solar charger. I'd have a fold up tent on top with a cool lader to gain access to it. On all four corners I'd have a bumperjack or some other similar type of leveler system I also would probally keep the stock parling brake to hold it untill the levelers are deployed. like I said built it a million times in my mind don't know about the privvy, probally just go out in the forest with my trusty shovel, lol!

Check out motorcyclle camping trailers. There is a variety of compact pop-up/tent tarailers available. They are small and lightweight - designed to be towed by a motorcycle.

The downside - mostly they're set up for street use. But hey, Baja guys could beef one up!

They are a good idea (I've been looking into them for my motorcycle). They start at about $3500 and go up from there!

here's one I spotted on craigslist for example:

tucson.craigslist.org/...19764.html

For offroad use maybe add a wider axle, fenders and taller tires.
