Sounded pretty good!

Those push rod tubes are pretty easy to pull out and put new seals on if they are the reusable kind.

maybe it just me..... but it has been my experience,,,, that all VW air cooled motors leak oil. I have never own one that did not leak...

Now that being said I have been able to fix non-running leaks. but when the motor is running it seem they leak/sweat oil...

EVERY Race engine I have had built is leaking oil by the end of the race.

If you drive an air cooled VW just plan on a leak here and there.

Buy and ecotec 2.2 and call it a day. It will work great and give you close to 200hp when set up correctly

The Ecotec engine itself is not expensive. What IS expensive is 1st the adapter and clutch, which will set you back another 2/3 the cost of the car that would run. Then 2nd, the REAL expensive part is the electronics which can often cost a couple thou. Then there is the motor mounts, throttle cable, (and you have to have either the throttle pedal and wiring for the later fly-by-wire throttle body or the earlier cable throttle body. Then add in the cost of the headers and the custom exhaust and muffler, a custom air cleaner setup, High pressure FI fuel pump and lines, etc................
And while they DO make good power, the horsepower claims just keep climbing and climbing. Kinda like "how big was the fish that got away?"

Remember too, that more hp at the flywheel means more expensive gear box and the rest of the drivetrain.

I'm not real fond of turbo engines for a desert and mountain offroad car. They are great for quick blasts on sand dunes and if that is all you do offroad, then a turbo is good. But for general purpose use they are not a good thing. So what engine and induction system you choose depends heavily on how you plan to use the Baja.

For info on a 2.3 Ford swap, talk to AZBaja. He's run a 2.3 Ford for many moons.

there are a lot of things that could cause the car to want to roll with the clutch pedal depressed. The first thing I would check is the clutch pedal free play not more than 3/4" I hate to do this to ya but I would really recommend pulling the pedal assembly to inspect the clutch pedal linkage. it's a hook style and are usually about worn out so your first offroad venture and it Will break so you have to double clutch it to get home! Another thing, grab the pulley and see if there is any front to back movment usually if there is its from the thrust bearing ie complete rebuild, for referance stock end play is around .004-.008". the thrust bearing takes an especally hard beating off road when you "pop" the clutch and that slap is transferred to the thrust bearing. Good luck

i couldnt feel really any play in the pulley, only thing now is the 1,2 side likes to make a popping sound at idle, so my guess is it needs to be flashed timed instead of static timed. As for the clutch i adjusted the wing nut some tonight and that seams to work for the intial take off but unless i disengage the clutch by taking it out of gear it seems like it want to hold and keep moving
