Well after doing my normal studying in class (cough*** craigslist cough***) i found a 72 listed as a 71 bug for sale. Well get to the guys house and ask him about and he said hed owned it than gave to his son who had a kid on the way and didnt have time to wok on it. Asked if i could here it run and he said, its been siting for 6 months and is not getting power at the starter. Also he said he didnt know if the motor still ran or not. 1/2 mile down the rd i told my buddy to pop the clutch and lets see if she fires, well she did and i was happy.

This was Sunday night

stripped the paint off the top and primed it

And did the best rattle can paint job i could

yes i know i paint on the windows and the seals, well tomorrow i have new seals coming in, except i accidentally ordered for an 71 instead of a 72, so i need to see if they will work or if i need to send back, and ill clean them off now that i have out of the vehicle. also got a carb rebuild for the 34pict3, new distributor w/ electronic ignition, Bosch blue coil, Bosch wire, and Bosch plugs. Took the motor out to clean up and inspect due to a oil leak, left over night and had a little noticeable spot .

spent yesterday and today working on the bug.
1st item was wiring for the turn brake and night lights, got everything working except for when my lights are on the turn signal is uber slow, why would this be.
2nd item was getting everything bolted back up i have a rebuilt carb, new dizzy with electronic ignition, new bosch blue coil, new ngk plugs gaped to .25, and new wires. I have static timed it to cylinder number 1 i think its weird to get to tdc at cylinder 1 i am at bdc on the after market pulley, could someone accidentally installed upside down

she runs "alright" but not the best.

has oil leaking from almost every push rod tube so that needs to be addressed and leaking from valve covers due to bad seals

Congrats, look like you have a good base for a nice Baja. Lights blinking slow with headlights on, but blinking normally with headlights off can be caused by a number of things. Bad battery, bad/weak alt/generator. weak regulator, non-stock bad wiring. But first I recommend checking ground wires and battery connections are clean. hook up a voltmeter at battery and monitor before starting engine, after starting, then with blinkers, then with blinkers and headlights. Knowing the numbers should help pinpoint your bugs issue.
Double check that #1 is the cylinder you are timing to. It's not likely to have the pulley 180 degrees off from install, but is possible if there are 2 keyway notches in the pulley. I do remember reading reviews on some aftermarket pulley being manufactured 180 off. Don't remember the brand.
With that much oil leakage, my first thought i that you have too much blowby at the rings or/valves. With the engine running, take off the oil filler cap. Is there a lot of air coming out of the engine there? You can put your hand over the opening and tell as well. If there is blowby, recommend doing a compression test and even better a leak down test to get a handle on what rings/ valves, and guides status is.

I'll second that on a weak ground or voltage. I also had problems with the stock fuses getting a little corrosion on them and having weak contacts. Just a little sanding and bending the tabs of the fuse holder to apply a little more pressure and haven't had anymore issues.

I've seen the 180* out before and believe it is because the distributor drive gear is off 180*. It has little washers that are down in the case so it's not that easy to pull and correct.

If you're going with the 34pict3 and a .009 mechanical advance distributor you may have a bad flat spot off idle which is a known issue that not all people have. A vacuum advance Dizzy is supposed to be a solution or modifying the throttle plate.

Best of luck to you!

Would would be the best person to bring the motor to. I don't have the tools plus I am not an expert or novice on these vws. More or less ill need the valves adjusted and I guess checked for bad rings. If it is bad rings how much do u think to get replaced.

Dougs bugs in mesa is a good Vw shop. Extension and Broadway. 480 962-1101.
Looks like its going to be a blast by the way!
And I agree with the previous posts...you have bad grounds on the lights.. stock the housings grounded to the steel fenders. Now they are fiberglass and have no good ground. Run a ground wire from each housing to the car chassis and try the lights again. Remember to clean the paint off of where the wire connector will contact the metal on both ends...good luck!

Well judging from how easy you can turn your engine by hand (in the video), I would guess rings are bad. That with the valve guides probably equally worn can make for "fun" trying to get past DMV emission testing. Conundrum brings up a good point on the SVDA "vacuum advance" distributor. I can attest personally that it helps smooth the motor out. Your valves need set with the engine stone cold, before being ran for the day. As a minimum, I recommend getting the book "How to Keep your VW alive" and read it. It covers in easy to understand detail most anything stock with the VW as far as maintenance goes. Then "Baja, Bugs, and Buggies" or "How to build Buggies (Dune Buggies)" should cover what has been modded on your rig, plus give you some ideas for future improvements. Some would recommend the Bentley VW manual, but prob covers more than you need and is harder to understand. AND if you order from the links on the right side of the page, it helps AZBaja cover some of his operating costs for the site.. That is where I ordered mine. Has lots of reading if your just getting into VWs.
If compression test shows bad rings, this might help....
www.ebay.com/itm/VW-85...22&vxp=mtr

the link is for Mahle 1600 cc piston & jug set for $120.

if you don't get help before the weekend, I can help show you how to adjust the valves. Remember this Friday is the East side AZBaja meeting at the Sonic on Country Club. If you go you meet others to chat and also see their rigs as well.

The 009 is run by many people that love them. And the quality ones will do OK, the lower quality or worn ones can give you problems. It is just mentioned that the vacuum is a better one for the engine compared to the 009. Will make the engine run cooler, better gas mileage, and better power. Like for example, if you are towing a 6000lb trailer and compare a V6 to the V8 in a pickup. Some people love the V6 and put up with the less than optimum power to tow the trailer, others want the easier work of the V8. Both will do the job, just one does it better. If you are on a tight budget, just use the 009 till you decide you want to improve. The distributor was designed for a heavy VW with the small motor. Was designed for the motor being run high RPMS alot. Very little low RPM advance. The advance comes in quick and goes to max quickly. Gradual advance to match the RPM all through the RPM range is better. Hope that explains it better. If you are just going to run hard ALL the time the 009 is reasonably close to the SVDA dizzy. Run what u got till you want to change.

well before the sun went down went and started her up after i thought i got everything timed, leaks a lot of oil from the right valve cover because half the cork seal is missing, and it looks like its only leaking from 2 push rd tubes, might try some heat sealant to cover those up
