I know, I know, everyone says its not a good idea because of the strut front end but I dont live anywhere near a dessert where im going to be doing any kind of jumps, I live in vermont with alot of mud and hills so my question is this........... Would it work if I was to raise the rear torsion springs and in the front, put rear springs from a rabbit inside the front stock ones along with a 2in hard rubber spacer? Like I said, NO jumps, just mud and hills. Also, I would like to run 31's in the rear and probably 28 - 29's in the front for tires. If anybody has any info or feedback, please feel free to chime in and also if anybody has built one, please post pics and maybe some info of what was done. ANY bugs here in vermont are very hard to find without being a total rot box, but I did just get this super that is in great shape and really want to build a baja with as much lift as possible, I already have a volksrod project going. I don't think anyone on here has tried that combo, so let us know if it works so we can tell the next Super Beetle Fan. Or when they Search the Site they'll see your post(s).

I've used spacers on other Vehicles that used springs. Basically unbolt the assembly, then bolt the spacer to the strut assembly, then bolt back into the original holes. On the '05+ Nissan Xterra, you had to unbolt the whole assembly and rotate it 180*.

I haven't done the reindex, but have considered it. I already use a set of CHEAPO coilovers and have noted the possibility of damage for doing so because the shock mounts are meant for Dampening, not supporting the weight of the bug. The shock portion is worn, so it's on the to-do list.

The larger the tire in the rear, the more of a dog it'll be until you're moving. I run 31" in the rear and 32" in the front. 1600 DP w/Webber Progressive and Engle 110 cam. It seems to get me around off-road OK, the cam is what really makes the difference.

Good luck with your project and anything other than Super, I'm sure you can find on AZBaja.

I think you have the right idea.. And I think it'll be fine.. I have a pretty nice rail but I try not to jump it... It's the landings that cost me money.. I'm a nice little Baja bug I'm not planning on jumping it either... Those folks that you see jumping their cars high up in the air have spent a lot of money and they are far and few between.. When I lived in upstate New York we used to play in the mud it was sticky as I remember..

I would probably model your Baja bug after a class 10 racer car,,

lift the front lift the rear and carry a come along or a winch.. Use tall skinny tires like the dew on the class 10.. But a skid plate on the front.. And protect the engine block.. And go have fun.. You'll have to play with the tire sizes. As I remember having a wide aggressive tread did not work as well is having a thin aggressive tread tire.. In the desert we have a lot of sand and we need flotation you may not need that in your area.. If you're interested Kenny son is thinking about selling his super beetle/baja that he is converted the front beam to a link pin front beem I don't believe that it has any rust but it will need to be built.. I'm pretty sure that he selling it cheap and I'm not sure how much a carrier will cost to transport it to Vermont.. A friend of mine's a dealer and he puts the jobs out for bid and can usually move the car around the USA for around $400.00

If you plan on just fixing up your super beetle I probably wouldn't use that rubber ring I've tried them in the past when you start to beat on them they just come apart.. By yourself a caliper and head on down to the junkyard measure the stock spring diameter length and width and find yourself a vehicle that is a little heavier than your super beetle and install those Springs on your car if you find them to be too stiff I heard that you can relax a spring by heating it up with the torch in till you would achieve the ride you're looking for..

Thank you very much for your input, I will definately keep you guys updated when I start with it and try to remember to take pics as I go for future super beetle owners. As far as the tires go, it will be in the next post down, thanks again.

Thanks for responding. As far as jumping, I tottaly agree with you on that, for me, its not worth it to jump it then fix it, I will be sticking to the mud and some hill climbing and thats it. As far as the tires go, I agree on that as well, the wider tires are alot better for floatation in the loose sand, but here in vermont, not as good, the narrower the tire, the better so it cuts thriugh the mud and get to the bottom for some good grip. I will plan on building some sort of a front plate of some sort, just have to do more research on that to see what I will be able to do and for the rear, I THINK it might be easier, I hope, lol. So the tires, I was thinking like 275/65/15 or somewhere around there, like a narrow but good 28 - 29 in tall tire and in the front, im not sure if I should go with the same size or smaller, I have just seen way to many tire combos to decide, but might go with the same size so it will sit correct instead of smaller and have it slope to the front, I dont know, lol. If any of this makes sence, please let me know or any thoughts or more input. Sorry to be such a newbie but I wanna do it right the first time as funds are limited to keepmtrying different things. Thanks again.

For the rear suspension, I have never gotten into the spring plates of a beetle but know that it is a dangerous process to try and raise it. How do I raise it? I have heard something about cutting an extra notch in the tortion spring or something, and turn it up? Anways, does anyone have an idea of how much lift I can gain in the rear, just so I can get an idea for the front? And, thanks again. Smile

got a couple thoughts.... When I lived on the East Coast most people own two sets of rear tires one set to drive around for nine months of the year and then for three months of the year they would run their gnarly studded tires to get around in the winter months I used to be able to pick these tires up for $10 a set bolts them up to my ride and race around the forests until I shredded one on a root,,... Pull another tire out of the trunk throw it on and away I went.... These were just the ticket for off-road back East... I would suggest carrying a set of chains with you the come in handy when you just can't quite make a Hill... Also found to be very cheap in that part of the world... For the rear end you can only notch it about an 1/4 of an inch

not really worth the time and the effort.. If you notch it too much you will pull your rear shock apart and it won't last. As far as re-indexing the rear spring plates I would go out to youtube.com and look at the various methods .. I use the method of chaining the car to the bottom of my hydraulics floor jack and jacking it up and then pounding the spring plates in with the sledgehammer ,,,.. As far as a reference point I usually recommend splitting the bottom bolts on your spring plates cover for the initial setting ...As far as the rear skid plate empi sells a nice triangular shaped one that I'm sure that you would be able to adapt that'll protect your transmission in your engine block.. As far as the front bumper drilling a couple holes in the bumper and bending a pieces steal all the way back to your pan should do the trick.. As far shocks... the front shock should be fine.. But in the rear you're going to need more dampening.. Try a KYB white.. But still that might not have enough dampening for which looking for so you might have to measure from islet to islet fully open.. And purchase a shock for an RV the will have much stiffer valving..

Will thank you my friend you brought back a lot of memories... Here's a photo of my first 1969.. Out in the forest having an awesome time... With a pair of studded rear tires I was able to outperform almost all the four-wheel drives that tried to chase me... As you can tell by my facial expression I was hooked..
