Hi All,

Been quiet in here. It's the heat. My project is stalled waiting for the tranny to be redone. Looking forward to when it cools off and some rides here locally.

In the meantime, I have taken on a local project. Anybody wants to help, let me know.

Going to pimp a ride for a Marine.

This young man is not expecting a car transformation while he is away. It will be our gift to him to say “thank you for your service.” My past experience in this type of thing is that it is always paid forward and I suspect he will be very grateful. Our goal to fully “Pimp his ride” is $5,000.00 and some work / parts. We have Jason @ AZPConcepts (http://www.azpconcepts.com/) helping out currently on the finish fabrication and some of the board members from various off road websites such as DTSFab.com and the Samba. links to the build threads are here: and here: That will let folks follow the progress.

Our goals? Create a safe and reliable “Fast Attack” vehicle for Ryan and his boys to rip through the desert in and create some memories.

Every bit helps, and no donation is too small to make a difference. I will be working on a parts list should you have some stuff in your garage. Currently on our wish list besides cash is the following:
VW Experienced Mechanic – it runs, but needs some love
Side Glass
Rear Fenders
A paint job
Various off road bits and pieces – have a set of lights sitting around?

Again, thank you in advance for supporting a current active duty serviceman, his former Marine wife and their two young boys.

I do have a new pair of KC's that I would be more than willing to donate to this build.

Thanks! Let me take a full gander at the car and we can get the full parts list. Looks like a sourced some rear bumpers.

Really need somebody that knows there way around a poorly running VW. Looks good, but does not stay lit / running. I am in the dark on the VW motors.

Could also use a windshield if anybody has any ideas there.

I'm assuming it's way out on the east side? I'll check my stuff against your list, but most of mine is just used junk. Hopefully I'd have something you needed, but that Bug looks great already! LOL Better than mine anyways!

There's a host of possible reasons not to idle. Plugged jet, adjustment, timing, cut-off solenoid not opening fully, etc... What kind of carb is it? Doesn't look like any I've worked on before from the pictures.

I hope you have great Baja for him when he returns!

Day Five Update - Rockin the bug!

All of our servicemen and their families deserve much credit. We can’t make a difference for all of them, but with the help of the folks below, and some folks still to join, we can and will make a difference for this Marine and his family. About five days in and we are progressing right along with this project! We are so going to rock this little bug.

Almost have the PayPal account set up for the Give Forward campaign. Give forward has been really easy to work with, but like any place they have rules and guidelines. One of them is you have to state a goal. I just put 5k for a number. Seriously think with the donations in kind we can pull it off for way, way, under that. Anything left over will go to a service cause. PayPal has the same hoopty hoops. Just a little longer and the give forward campaign will be linked via PayPal. It still accepts cc, just not PayPal yet. Give forward link with update: gfwd.at/18JzOkf

Hello everyone. My name is Mike and I am the brother of the Marine that Yummi has so graciously decide to help. Like Yummi has stated, my brother is currently on active duty with the USMC station in Quantico, VA. This bug was his car in high school and quickly turned into a flower pot in my parents yard after getting married and having kids (sound familiar?). After his first deployment to Iraq he started working on his first love, doing favors, making trades and occasionally spending some of his illustrious military salary :). Four years ago he deployed to Okinawa with the family and I offered to store his bug in my garage. While he was in Okinawa he had to deploy again to Afghanistan for his last 6 months. Before he could get all the sand out of his ears, he received orders to Virginia and that is where we are know. Thank you for all your help and donations. I honestly had no plan of this happening but Yummi has stepped up big time! Coming from a former Marine and professional firefighter, it is good to see so many great people still out there. Paypal is working 100% Give forward link with update: gfwd.at/18JzOkf

Ok, spent the morning with Mike (Ryan’s brother) and Jason from AZP Concepts. This car is really pretty well along. It is clear that Ryan’s goal was to do it right the first time. Really is just finishing up some loose ends, work on some pretty bits and it should be good to go.

We are keeping the interior pretty much the way it is, except for some new bead rolled door panels. His boys have “decorated it” with stickers, etc and we want to stay true to the car’s history and any emotional ties it may have for him. Will have concept photo shop in a bit. So with that we were able to update the list. Yes, we are shooting to make it pretty nice and yes some are more wants than “needs.”

The plan – get it running / tuned up first, then off to the east valley for some fab love, install some gizmos / gadgets / and wet sanding. All starts with getting it running again.

If you have anything that is on the list, and care to help, let me know. I will send you the shipping addy and remove from the master lst so we don’t get duplicative stuff.

I will be gone for a couple of days so don't get grumpy if I can't get right back to you.

Sometimes thing happen for a reason. One of the folks that stepped up to get this Baja running is likely the best qualified to do just that. Why? Well, he is the owner of

Perri's German Autobahn
2221 W. Broadway Rd. Mesa, Arizona 85202
602-930-9676
www.perrisgermanautobahn.com

This is their qualifications:

Quote::
Perri's German Autobahn (formerly Perri's German Auto Repair) has been providing service for the legendary Audi and Volkswagen since 1960. Some of you may remember when I was at Apache and Rural in Tempe and we were called German Auto Repair. Since we specialize in Audi and VW we are able to provide excellent service at reasonable prices.
German Autobahn uses quality OEM parts from Audi, VW, ATE, Bosch, Boge, Jurid, Kolbenschmidt, Liquimoly, Mahle, Mann, Pagid, Pentosin, ZF, etc to insure only first quality parts are used in maintaining your vehicle.
Perri’s commitment to offroad does not end at Volkswagens.

He is also involved in Arizona 4x4 Recovery. www.arizona4x4offroadrecovery.com They have great you tube videos of off road recoveries on their website. The off road community can be a wonderful place. Glad to be a small part of it.

BTW, so far we have 10 business and 16 individuals that are part of this project with cash, or donations in kind. Will update the list soon as I can.

Thank you again to everybody who is stepping up. We are going to rock this Marine's world.

Big shout out to:

Quick Light
www.quick-light.com/

They came through on this drive with a 6’ blue led whip.

Quick lights is always first when it comes to various causes like this. There are many led whip guys out there. But again, always first to support a worthy cause. How do I know? Simple, I watch what they do and how they conduct themselves and have been involved with them before on very worthwhile causes.

Next time you lament that business owners don’t give back, think about my observations. It is good to support them that support our off road community. Next whip? Quick Light.

Here is a picture of the light being carefully protected by “Hoodlum” the "project coordinator." (We are going to leave it under wraps until we need it.)

Here is what it will look like when it is going strong for years to come.

Thanks again Quick Light!

One of the challenges on a project like this is allowing the vision to be shared. With thanks to Dale Bartley we have a Photoshop rendition of what will be close to the final car. This will likely change a bit, and the colors are just a skoosh off, (light blue to match interior and camo tan lowers) but close enough to share the vision.

Here the car is all loaded up ready to start its journey with the first stop at Perri's German Autobahn www.perrisgermanautobahn.com

Here is the photo shop of the finished car.

I am confident that Jeremy Huebsch at Goldies Paint and Body www.facebook.com/pages...5221055264 will be able to make our vision better than expected.

Dropped her off this am with Perri at his shop.

Thanks again to everyone that has pitched in. My brother started this project with I.O.U's, favors, and trading while he was stationed in California at Camp Pendleton. He's always asking me about it and worried that I'm storing crap in and on it. I hope I get to meet all of you and can't wait to surprise my little brother. Thanks!!!
