O.K. I think I have just redemed my self. You see I was the unforchant host of a string of breakdowns and malfuntions! You name it and I have either broke it, bent it or flat out ripped it off my car. Well this past July 4th weekend I went 639 miles on a spectactular camp trip! The only breakdown was a 10 dollar air compressor. It started as an idea, could I go camping for a week and survive. Seemed doable so I wipped out my trusty Gazateer and started to find connecting roads to places I like to camp at. Once I figured the basic rout I got on my Garmen Map Source to actually map it out then down load it onto my GPS cake walk. When I go to down load it it dosen't reconize my gps! oh no 3 nights of track macking for naught! Too late now, I gotta go so I I'll just figure it out on the fly, so from my house I head up Litchfield rd to West I-10 then shoot up the 303 to Lake pleasant parkway (99 ave) cross the 74 then head up the New River road to I-17 go North and then get off on the RockSprings Exit. From there I took some back roads to the Maggie May Mine rd, that took me to the Bumble Bee road up to Cleator, but I had to stop at a watering hole to air up my Left Rear tire, Bam I'm off again on up hill to Crown King, smooth gravel all the way to town. From town its a short 6 mile trip to the lean toos. steak and potatos for dinner and figure out the next days destenation on the map. to be continued

I awoke in my lean too to the sounds of Ravens josteling for the booty the previous campers had left. ok get up breakfast load up and I'm off, almost that one tire is low Damn I bet its going to give me trouble. alright then air it up slam a few plugs in it check for bubbles good now I'm off. back down to Criwn King, through town and up Towers mountain rd. At the top I turn left onto the Senator hyway the whole road is smooth, just third gear idling. After a while I meander into the back side of Mayer, a couple gallons and a few bags of ice and I am off again, now I an heading South East on a dirt roadand looking for a certan road headed off to the left. When I hit cordes I know I missed the turn off, but there was onlt that one road, get out the map and look at the gps, yup thats the road, but thats not the name oh well it works. from that road I cross the hiway anto the old Sycamore road to Dugas which is little more than some ranch houses. I find my Forest Road number and start down the trail, still nice and well travelled. While I am driving I see thunder black clouds and lightning ahead of me, cool I'll miss it all Wrong I got the leftovers, mud clay sticking to the tires and water flowind down the middle of the road! Continued

D didnt want to rut the road and all of this mud stuck to me was not fun either! I found a little hill with some grass in it so I spread out a tarp and put my tent on it. I took my little shovel and scraped most of the mud off my rail ug! all the tire spinning must have loosened my repair on the tire, yup it was flat again! so I had to roll the tire to find the pluh all 15 0f them! after I find the patch I have to take the shovel and scrape the mud and then wash the area clean for some more plugs, aired it up and went into the tent to cook diner. the next morning just smelt so fresh and clean I knew it was going to be awsome! also had some visitors in the night, a couple of elk went through camp in the middle of the night and left several piles of thier calling cards. went to load up the rail and good the tire is still holdong air! off I go the road is drying up but its still slow going so as the huge chunks of mud get flung off right at me!, eventualy there are more and more rocks in the road and the road is starting to climb up a little valley, cool no more mod I can really make up some good time! Wrong the road I was on turned into FR 81A with was little more than steep hill climbs over rocks the size of small tool boxes first gear was no problem they wern't really big or terribly steep, just LONG with a tire that has 15 tire plugs in it.

Then after I keep climbing for what seems like forever I drive around a huge pine tree and follow the road straight down the mountain, again with rocks and ledges, if you had a good skid plate it woul'da been no problem. at the bottom of the mountain is a huge gorg and the road is following the side if it and now I can see the other side, looks deep. and where the two sides meet there is a fence so I have to creep between a fence and a endless drop off. on the other side is a hill and as soon as I crest it there was a cabin! wow gota check it out looked real fine at one time all the things were there hot water, sink, shower,a porcelin comode! it was called the buckhorn ranch, so I must be really close to civilation! Wrong again the road got a little better until it crossed the power lines then it went back to a soft dirt trail that turned into a gravel road which turned into a dirt superfreeyay with rvs and trailers everywhere! the road finally ended at blacktop. By now Im some where above the mollegon rim! Map check see my next Forrest Road I need to be on 141 I think this takes me all the way to FR300 or Rim Road there it was just a quick jaunt to Kiel Springs.

In the morning I headed East on FR300 towards Young and the 300 is just breath taking! I took a little detour at Woods Caynon lake to restock the ice in the chest. once back on track I topped up my gas tank in Young and I have to say I was feeling just Super! I went on through Young to the next FR road I was on this road about 7-8 miles when the gps piped in that I was near to the ultimate goal a cabin in the middle of nowhere! I spent 4 days there and it was pure therapy I saw all kind of animals and even 4 a-10s bearly above the tree lines they looked so slow I thought they would crash for sure! early Friday I loades for the last time and aired the tire for the last time also the compressor was blowing sparks and flames and melted out of its plastic housing! I returned home on 188 I think cut around Rosevelt lake and took the Apachie trail to... well Apachie Juction, where I stopped at a Ace and bought two bottles of Slime and a"hd" air compressor.

I almost made it to 27th ave when all if the plugs were flung out of their home in the tire so I pulled into a mexican resturants parking lot to put on my spare and once I stopped moving it hit me like a punch in the face, its Hot and Humid I'm back So I hurry and burn, ops change the tire and polish the last of my Gatoraids and head home, my head still swimming from the previous weeks adventures! I drove the whole thing on my own power and level! I did notice that my hot air from the oil cooler is being ingested into my air cleaner and mabey even my cooling fan, Hope you enjoy the read I enjoyed the adventure! Kenny

Thanks guys I did go solo and it was just awsome, that would be quite the adventure for the Az Baja club, or another trail, just need to find connecting trails.

Kenny,

What Gazateer do you have and where did you source it?

Thanks for any info.

sorry for taking so long to get back with you I actually got mine at a circle k years ago. You can also get them at Cabellas and almost any other outdoor outfitter ,or try Wide World of Maps on 27th ave and Indian School Rd. on my trip though I noitced that there were a couple of Forrest roads that had different numbers than were in my book. thats how old it is! I actually have two Gazateers the red one shows all trails, hiking and driving and I also have a black one that baiscly shows only the well traveled dirt roads.Either one is a big help off road. when you can stop for a "map check" you can check your location and enjoy a cold beverage and a snack!
