Hello! I am new to the site, but working on my 3rd type 1. I plan to make this one into a type 11. After getting her functional over the past 8 months, I now need to raise the ride height. I've never done that before, so I'm trying to do plenty of research first! I've done a ton of Beetle engine, electrical, and body work, but I've never lifted one before, so I'm hoping you guys can help me out with specifics and technique, I'll upload more pics of Daphne (my bug) when I get a chance; I've done a ton of work on her over the past 8 mos. I do a lot of my mechanic-ing with my 16 year old. He's moved on to his own project- a 1962 Corvair- after working on Beetles since he was 13.

Here's a list of VWs I have owned:
1993 Fox (totaled)
1963 Beetle (driven into the ground)
2006 New Beetle convertible (repossessed)
1969 Beetle (I gave up on this one- traded it)
1966 sunroof Beetle (my current project and daily driver)

1969 Green Beetle (got mad at it and let it go)
2006 New Beetle convertable (repossessed)
1966 sunroof Deluxe Beetle (ruined by fire)
1970 Baja (current project- gutting and fixing the PO's mess!)

Front - Cut and turn the beam and or weld on adjusters to fine tune the height. You can also get Spindles that are offset to gain more clearance, but I've heard to stay away from the Empi ones?

Rear - Reindex the torsion bar, however I've never done this and have heard many people complain about the ride after going to far, so you might be doing it several times till you get it just right.

Both, you could run some adjustable coilover shocks, however you're adding strain to parts that were meant for dampening but are now holding the car up too.

I run a stock front, a couple more inches would be nice, but I usually have no problem going where I want too.

I run a stock rear, but I have the cheepo coilovers that give it just enough height for me. With a swing axle I don't think you want it to be super high because it might make it easier to have an axle tuck up and under on corning hard which can make you loose control. I've had it happen and fortunately didn't hit anything or roll it. CAME CLOSE! LOL

Hopefully that'll help, keep us up to date! Smile

Thanks for the response Conundrum!

You are right- I don't want to go too high and was probably going to run stock on the front as well. Can you tell me more about the coil overs for the rear? I just need a tiny bit more clearance in the rear and I'm good. If I could avoid adjusting the torsion bars in the back that would be great!

I've seen those on here before, but I haven't run into anyone using them.

I think he's a swingaxle so he can't use the IRS type that you linked.

Let us know how they work out! I'm curious.

They have them for both IRS and swing axle you just have to know how long your bars are. I will let you know how they work out when I get them. I was about to pull the trigger on some adjustable plates when I found these so I will wait for the funds Very Happy
