Im thinking about building a baja bug and wanted to get some info before I get started. Iv been looking at a lot of photos and reading build forums on AzBaja so you have been a lot of help already.
I would like this to be capable of being a daly driver. There are no deserts here in Ohio so it would be mostly for looks and snow, maybe a little off road. Id like to build as I go.
What year Should I buy? I read some where to avoid 66/67 because they have to many exclusive parts.
Any help you can give me would be great.Thanks.

Apoc, from what you describe you want... I would not look so much at specific years to avoid, more at quality of the base car and the design you need. Purists that don't want to modify their car and use other year parts on their whatever year car sometimes avoid those years as their are a few items that are limited year specific if you don't want to modify your car. You on the other hand are saying that your car is not going to be a purist dream machine. With that said.
Overall avoid the Superbeetle, heavier and much weaker front design for even mild offroading. Suspension for your described needs would be ball joint front end with IRS rear as their highway roadability characteristics are a little better as compared to the linnkpin/swingaxle combo.
Most of the rest of the car when comparison shopping should be dictated by quality and secondly by creature comforts/looks. For example, make sure floor pan not all rusted out, heater channel not all rusted out either, electrical wiring works and everything electrical works, etc. You get the idea.
Once you get the one you want. Ignore the purists and frankenstein it to whatever you want/need. Mine as does many others has parts from the 50's, 60's, 70's, and even non-VW parts (those 2002 Chevy Cobalt seats are sooo much more comfortable than VW seats).

Welcome to the site...

A couple things old VW's are known for is No Heat, poor to no defrosters - you will need an ice scraper for the inside of your windshield in the Winter... They do go through the snow great, but you better wear your snuggies, gloves and ear muffs..

Unless you have a Gas Heater, if so you can drive all Winter wearing only shorts and flip flops with the windows open... Cool

One other thing is "Rust" It has taken it's toll on them, floors and heat channels here in the midwest...

But they make great daily drivers the rest of the year...

Just my $.02..

Welcome to AzBaja. If your only going for the look a 73-76 Super Beetle with its wind proof dash would be the way to go. Later on if you want to off road it is not that hard to convert it to a beam suspension.

I like the 69. It's the first year of the IRS and the still have the classic look to them. It's the best for over all setup. B/j front and it's rear and it's going to already be a 12v car.
