I'm confused. So if I have a sandrail (vw powered) and it weighs less than 1800lbs (it does), all I need is the OHV sticker to drive on dirt roads? A couple of years ago a forest service person said that to drive on a dirt road I had to be street legal, i.e., street plate, emmission, insurance, etc.. Any clarification on that aspect? I currently have the OHV sticker, insurance just no street plate (I don't want to have to go through the hassle of emmissions testing and registration when I only drive it off-highway).

If you want to drive on dirt roads, you must be street legal, insured, AND have the OHV decal since your VW is a sand rail weighing less than 1800 #. If you want to drive on dirt trails, you need an RV plate and OHV decal. The only confusion should be about what is a dirt road vs a dirt trail Smile

I was told that if you are over 1800lb you just need to be street legal and insured, you dont need OHV decal to ride on any dirt road in AZ. and maybe a state trust permit if you want to drive on State Trust Land.

Isn't that what I said Smile The OHV decal is for vehicles weighing under 1800#. If you weigh over that and are registered street legal, you should be good to go until/if the law is rewritten.

Thanks.... My bad...

on the state trust permits... I was told this year I should make a copy of the permit and put a copy in every vehicle I would ever take onto state trust land. she told me to keep original safe at home.

what is your thought?

I refer you to the AZ State Land Department... 602 542-4631
I just called them and asked your question. They said the following:

1. you must display the original hang tag on your vehicle...no copies allowed
2. you can only copy the FAMILY permit so each member of your family has a copy of the permit in the event you are separated. The original should be in your possession of one person in the party as well.
3. you can not copy the INDIVIDUAL permit and leave the original at home.j

Keep in mind I do not work for AZSLD and their policies are subject to change. The information presented here was gathered on 5/15/15 by contacting the Arizona State Land Department, the folks in charge of State Trust Land.

Hope it helps,
Jeff
