This year's 400 miler the attendance was low due to scheduling the event on Mother's Day weekend after taking my beatings for publishing the date without checking every possibility for conflict I was pleasantly surprised for the people who showed up. This year's crew was a fast-moving group at pumpkin center we had a driver's meeting and decided to extend the event and take A+ road and up Cherry Creek to young this extended our journey for about 40 miles we needed to drive hard to make sure that we made camp while it was still light out. We found the rim very windy and extremely cold during the daylight and we were unable to locate our friends at base camp due to incomplete directions we found the shortest road to drop us 5000 feet and found a secluded campsite near the fish hatchery extremely beautiful wood was plentiful, the fire was hot.. The next morning we set out for Route 300 after an extensive search we found our friends at base camp after exchanging stories we were off I noticed that some of the higher speeds there was something not right with my front end after performing some visual inspections I noticed that one of my tie rod ends was showing signs of wear this is a very serious issue if I lose a tie rod end I could stand a good chance of crashing the car. I have to add that Kenny did not think it was that serious and stood little chance of failing nevertheless I felt it was the best course of action to take it easy and head home and I was glad to have Kenny follow me out. I made it home without an issue there were no breakdowns and everybody made it home..

Well this is the third attempt of placing and using the go Pro 2 on my rail, I'm not sure I'm happy with where the camera is located I'm trying to show the suspension to give you a better idea of the train that I'm driving on I've rerouted the microphone into the cab so that you can hear the radio traffic I have not plumbed it into the sound system that goes through my headset so if you hear me singing "I'm sorry!!??!" I'm just enjoying the ride. I would like your feedback on what you think of the short video so that I can improve it.. And tell me if you're interested in the rest of the video footage that I've taken from the 400 miler. I think I have most of it recorded. I am kind of new to this go Pro thing so your feedback would be appreciated.

This must have been the weekend for front end damage. Upon leaving the group at pumpkin center, my front end decided to collapse and lower down to the point of no, and I mean no suspension. It was a very rough ride home.

One very lucky person I am......while hot rodding around the forest road on the first leg, my uhf handheld radio ( which I sit on) had found a way to fly out of my rail. Thanks to detective Dalton, who keyed into the radio and heard it was still transmitting a signal, and at one point he heard a quad drive by the lost radio. By reason of counting the time that past till we saw the quad, i estimated the distance to where I thought the area it would be. And believe it or not.....there it was, laying on the side of the road, with a small rock pushing or leaning on the Mic key.....thanks again detective Dalton .

Great day and great ride. Thanks

Stick your GoPro down lower to get all of the tire, and some of the ground.

It'll make the sense of speed go up, you'll see all of the suspension movement, the tire, and the terrain up ahead also. You're not seeing much suspension movement in the video because it shoots off the bottom of the screen.

Rear tires also show a ton of movement. I don't know how much down time you guys get on these runs to fool with the camera, but tons of footage and all sorts of different angles are needed to get something really cool.

One more little tip... If you're planning on uploading to YouTube (primarily) record in a 16:9 ratio resolution. It looks like you're creating 16:9 with your editing software.

EDIT: Here's an example:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8Hn26MoLnY

Ignore the stock iMovie music on a loop.

You can see the sense of speed, and suspension movement from just going <25 on pavement. The lower you get your camera, the more speed you'll get, just don't knock it off.

Tyler...we are not professionals on videos and we cannot afford to loose $400-600 gopro cameras to things like rocks and sandblasting the lens 's, since we are riding off road and not on a street in or on a quad...
The rocks and flying bits of sand and debris would just destroy the plastic and glass box's that hold the cameras.

I would like to personal invite you and your camera out to a club play day or event and would love to see your video.
I am not trying to be an ass but, the one thing we try to do is have fun and learn from our mistakes
I learn something every time we go out...some times its may only be a good joke of the day..

Speaking of that ....poor kenny's balls on his rail....they have shrunk and are now blue.....(sorry buddy)

See you out some time

good point Mike.

With the rocks and debris that always gets kicked up by my front tires I'm sure that my go pro would not last long. I went out and lowered the camera and took a few test shots if I go much lower the shock tower, tire and body get in the way of the camera shots. I'm in a try moving it back about 6 inches it looks like it has a better view of the suspension without compromising the screenshot. I won't know until I take it out for a ride..

Yet other thing I noticed is there isn't a real good representation of when I'm drifting haven't quite figured this one out yet you can hear the tire sliding and spinning but the screenshot doesn't accurately represented it.

Mike- it was constructive criticism.

Dalton- don't worry about breaking your camera, GoPros are tougher than you think. Water is about the only thing that will kill them, I had a chain eat into the case, and it's still good to go. About the most you'll do is scratch a $4 lens. Figure out a good leash, and you won't have to worry about losing it if it gets knocked off.

If you want to capture that tire, stick the camera further out laterally. Use the camera's fish eye lens to your advantage, stuff looks pretty neat with the curvature to the outside of the frame. You may also want to record more frames per second.

Detective Dalton....( I love that )

I am thinking you need to see the car sideways or sliding....at SDHQ they mounted their camera on the roof of their car, kinda towards the rear, so it show's more of body and its relationship to the road.

Mike- you are sooooo lucky finding that small little radio... I am still looking for that clip of you stuck in the ditch when you turned around to go find it...

I like it on the stand... I can move the go pro while I am driveing ... you need to see what I am talking about to understand.. I am going to move it back 6" and down about 5".. and take it for a drive. after looking at the tie rod closer when I got home it not as bad as I thougt... I could have compleated the run.. I ordered my tie rods today.... OUCH!! I am going to replace all 4 of them to be safe.

Dalton,

Here's a quick video I just put together.

www.youtube.com/watch?...e=youtu.be

It shows the difference between a frontward and rearward facing shot. You don't have to have the camera facing rearward all the time, but sticking it there occasionally can produce some good footage.

Also, the second half shows the punishment that a GoPro can take. Don't worry about damaging it.

It ground about halfway through the case, scratched the glass lens, and mostly destroyed the lockring.

Still water tight though.

They can take a TON of abuse and keep on working. I had my case open up once underwater- it roasted the battery, but the camera still works.

To make a good video, you'll need multiple angles. I'll pass something onto you that was passed on to me: your video doesn't need to be in chronological order. Most viewers will get a kick out of short 15-20 second clips, spliced together. You can still capture the memories of the trip, and make it entertaining.

Also, I'll warn you: the more you do with it, the more expensive it becomes. Once you get enough accessories , housings, and mounts to fill a good sized Pelican case, you'll be stuck where I'm at now. I'm at the point where I want to buy two additional cameras, to capture three angles at once.
