Hello Guys, my name is Carlos and I just move from San Diego Ca. to Gilbert. I am at my cousin's for now, but before looking for an apartment I had to look for a VW club, and since I just bought my VW a month ago, what better option than start in a new city and with a new club!!.
I am driving a 68 Type1 semi-baja and want to mention that I did not burn any oil or use any on my way here, but my engine arrived soaked with oil, I clean it and took it for another ride for abut 20 miles and noticed that is leaking from the crankshaft area (behind the pulley), now here is my dilemma, it does not have the original pulley, or the original oil filler neck (generator stand) or air cleaner, I noticed it does have a respiration underneath the oil filler where there is like a small "air filter" for lack of a better name (does look like the air filter I have in the carb, a metal mash with some material inside) so there is no hose to the carb air filter. After some investigation via internet I found 3 options, on the first one I am confuse.
1.- Add an oil breather and release pressure from head valve covers and oil filler neck.
2.- Add an oil sealer behind the pulley
3.- Put the original pulley since the groves are the ones needed for the push of the oil back to the engine.
Since number 1 is my dilemma , please explain, how does a hose getting to a box will help to release pressure since technically the respiration hole is open with just a filter? and it does not leak from there?
By the way, I am driving a 1600 dp with a 34pic carb and electronic ignition, also new to the area and frustrating not knowing my VW way around here (parts, info, buddys, etc.). I appreciate any help
Thanks
Carlos

Welcome to AZ and welcome to the site. Post some pics of the leak and the crank case breather and I'm sure you'll get some good advise.

It might be that cause I ran a test about loosing the oil filler cap and see what happens, and the cap being very heavy still was blown off place, I do not have a hose in the aftermarket oil filler, just the little filter shown on the picture above, or that hose is somewhere else that I have not seen?

Also check that small filter. It is looking very dirty and that would be coming from the inside out. That needs to let air out since it is your crank case ventilation.

I believe engine was done not long ago, will check on that date.
On the filter I will check into that and probably soal it in gasoline overnite and clean the exhaust hole. Thanks for inputs guys

I agree with others. I think that little crank case breather is probably sufficient enough to do the job.
However if you feel the need to change it, the way mine has been since the early 80's, and how I've seen alot of other VW's, is choice #1 you posted.
Running 2 hoses from each valve cover up to a central breather mounted somewhere above the engine, and a hose from the oil filler running there as well. Mine also has an oil dump tube from the bottom of the oil filler that dumps oil vapor straight to atmosphere (below the engine).
Been this way for 20+ years without issues.

Check filter and breather hole, took fitting out, clean, filter looks dark, but blow on it with no effort and air flows thru, will keep checking, thanks for inputs
