Post Post subject: buying and shipping a complete baja?

Well, I have recently started the search for my first baja. I know I'm looking in the 3k-6k price range and want it to be something that is already up and running so I don't have to learn everything on my first one.

Anyway, I have recently discovered that the dallas area is a pretty tough spot to find a good looking baja and that you can get much better deals from places in arizona and california. So I looked up the price to ship a car and it seems to be 500-700 for shipping from one of those 2 states. Now I know I can save 500-700 just because they are a lot cheaper because of the supply, but then I would have the fairly large concern of whether or not the baja is actually in as good of condition as I am hoping.

Do y'all have any thoughts on if I should just be patient and wait for one I can see in person? or do you think I could just be careful and hope that a well kept baja in that price range (maybe closer to the 5k or 6k) would just be in good condition. I'm not looking for brand new, but I don't feel like spending an instant $500 or so to make in actually start and run reliably.

If you buy Baja from out of state, be sure to get lots of photos and a complete list as to what is good and bad about the bug. Also, you can check with others in the area as to the reputation of the person selling the bug. If you know someone in the area a prospective car is located, have them go by and check it out.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to spend a little more time looking around home just for the convinience, but it's nice to know about backup plans.

You would be better off waiting for one. Right now is the prime time to get a steal of a deal on one. People are always selling toys this time of year.

Like I said before go buy a unrusted pan-body from your area for cheap $100-1000 and build it yourself, buy a welder if you dont have one. $500 on a welder is a decent lil burn box make sure it runs gas though. You will know whats into it then as far as when something breaks you can fix it, cheap. Bajas arent that expensive to make, they are just time consuming lil bastards(don't let my baja know I said that). They drain your time more than anything, but when you get to play with it its worth the time.

It all depends on what you want to do with it also. There is street-daily driver, class racing bugs, weekend warrior baja, sand baja, or combination of both street and offroad. Let us know hich one it is a must.

Lets say you have 6k to spend

$100-1000 I would never spend more than $1000 for something I am gonna beat the crap outta, unless its a steal of a deal.
$1200 for a decent engine running, or bus engine.
$500 for brakes
$500 for baja kit try and find a bug with one on it.
$1000 for 3x3 rear, you should be able to get a bus tranny used for that amount.
$800 front suspension, this is alot but good is better than broken
$1000 for parts, gauges, seats, 10 cans of krylon spray paint Twisted Evil your choice of colors, whatever lil things you need.

thats pretty high on some of the prices, but you get the idea.

There is a sweet one up near seattle on the Craigs List in the parts section.
Guy wanted $500 and it just needed a motor and a couple lil things.

I'm looking to use it as my daily driver. The main reason I was thinking about buying one that is already useable is because I'm pretty inexperienced with bugs and cars in general. I am used to using tools and have the time to spend, so if it is as easy as you say it is I would consider it. But would you really recommend someone with my lack of experience to build it from scratch?

That Green Baja over on the side, The person who own's it never had a clue. I just had an extra 76 T/A 6.6 I did not need and found some one who would trade with me. And from that point on I was on my own.

Just ask if your not sure before you do somthing. Like every one here, I'm not an expert, I have just done that task one more time than you have.

You wanna probably buy a nice complete one with a strong motor then. I didn't know yer expierence, thats why I asked. Get the book called "how to keep your Volkswagen alive" it will be your new best friend. If you dont want to work on a car too much, buy a honda, or better yet buy a Baja and put a honda engine in it. LOL.
