Sadly, the engine won't pass emissions with the rebuilt Kadrons, and I'm not putting anymore money or time into it. Perri and Dirtjunkie have been great and tried to help. The car really runs awesome, but it just won't pass the 1973 standards. It would be fine if I still lived in Flagstaff. I'll be listing the car for sale or will sell the engine seperately while my son and I still work on the body. Oh well, it would be an awesome engine in a pre-67.

Thanks again Perri.

why not just borrow another engine to smog it or bolt on a cat?

what dirtjunkie said!

when my grandpa used to have his emissions required baja we would take the stinger off, bolt a cat on with a stinger welded on the end of it and take it through emissions. little adjusting of the carb and it would pass no problem.

It isn't close enough for a cat to work. I will be taking a long break from the VW scene.

Here's the latest- although the 1955cc engine was awesome, it didn't pass emissions. I traded it for a rebuilt 1641cc to a fellow named Marty that rebuilds engines. I'll put the fresh 1641 cc in this weekend and try emissions again.

I focused on the K.I.S.S. principal. Dual Port, dual relief, doghouse internal cooler, rebuilt 34pict, alternator, petronix on 009, heater boxes with header and glasspack. I'll hook up the heat, and paint and interior on the way.
It is no longer the high performance car sitting in the garage because it won't pass smog. Now its the mild driver...

It may not have the screaming 1955 any more, but your baja has a stock suspension. The 1641 will get good mileage, have enough get up and go to run down the freeway, but not overpower the car off-road and put it on it's lid.

Suspension is the key to going fast off-road. Without it, a big motor is a waste of power and gas. I think you are going the right direction.

I had today off, so I worked on the baja. I changed the reverse switch on the trans because it was leaking. Then I installed the rebuilt 1641cc engine. Then off to emissions. Passed everything with flying colors- except hydrocarbons at idle. 1038 and 400 is allowable. Time to tweek the carb and try again!
