Hello AZBaja'rs,
Below is a copy/paste introduction...sorry about that Sad
I want to invite you all to my second Trail Talk, which will be out in the Florence Junction area...AKA Middle Gila Canyons. Details are in the newsletter, signup link is provided below.
Thanks,
Jeff

I'm the new guy at Arizona State Parks, in charge of the Statewide OHV Program. In the coming months, I will be rolling out some new programs to benefit OHV recreation and tuning up some of our existing projects. People often wonder what State Parks does for OHV recreation or have a misunderstanding of what we do. I invite you to join our newsletter to keep up on the latest news and visit our website at azstateparks.com/OHV . Our primary role is to manage our Statewide OHV Fund (which includes sticker and RTP money) for the benefit of the OHV community. Over the years, we have invested in the trails you enjoy on BLM and Forest Service lands, developed educational and volunteer programs, and granted quite a bit of money to some of the organizations, like AZOHVC and BLM, that have done the trail construction you all benefit from.

State Parks has not done much to toot our own horn in recent yeas due to staffing and budget issues, hence the misunderstanding as to how we fit into the bigger picture. That has changed since I have been hired and we are working hard to get people involved in creating or improving OHV opportunities all over the state. Please take part in my Trail Talk series if you would like to chat about OHV issues in person, I created this program so I can meet with trail users on Saturdays out on the trail! Swing by and say hello at the staging area before hitting the trail. Details about the February 16th Trail Talk is in the newsletter, including a map to get there.

Join our newsletter by clicking here. When you do, you'll get a copy of our latest issue. This will be the best way to track what our program is doing each month. As our website gets updated, we will provide even more detailed information about how your OHV fund is being invested.

Arizona State Parks is getting ready to do some great things, but I'll need your support to get it done! If you ever want to me to join a trail run or meeting, just shoot me an email. Most of my trips involve my mildly built tacoma or KLR650, both set up for doing long distance, backcountry travel.

take it easy,
Jeff Prince

I suppose that is true, just like signing up for this forum. The only thing you have to enter is your email address, the rest is optional.

Welcome to the site.

Always glad to see Parks / etc reach out to the community in a proactive / positive fashion. Too many times we get the impression it is all tickets, tickets, tickets. OK, the occasional search and rescue / save one of us - but you get no credit for that, we just default to tickets tickets, tickets.

I appreciate that AZ State Parks is making the effort.

Good to hear you have an off road background / interest.

As I recall there are sectors for parks? What sector do you represent?

Thanks, and again welcome.

Thanks for the message. I am not attached to a park or region...I'm the statewide OHV Program Coordinator. If it is in Arizona, and has something to do with OHV, that's my department Smile

My job is to make sure the OHV fund is used for OHV projects in accordance with our laws, get the OHV community involved, and develop programs for the OHV community that relate to our legislated responsibilities. I am a program manager and not a law enforcement officer, so no tickets from me Smile

Thanks for being an OHV volunteer! Make sure we meet at a future event. Supporting our volunteers is my top priority. I hope you can make it to the first OHVA Perk on 2/26.

Hey Jeff,

Quick question you may be able to answer. I know spark aresstors are required. My current set up is with Super Traps, by default they are a qualified "spark arrestor."

Can you give us some guide lines? I have heard of a testing tool that they use but cant find any info on that?

I am thinking of changing to a system like this and I am curious if it would pass a field test for spark arestor?

Same about the stickers. If I have a real car plate on my Baja that is also a street car. I should not need a sticker.

Thanks for your question, sorry I missed the message.

I believe the "spark arrestor" rule is a forest service one.
Here's the scoop from the source...
www.fs.fed.us/eng/pubs...511307.htm
I recommend contacting the Forest Service in your area for specific guidance in your case just to be safe. Unfortunately, I am not an exhaust system expert Smile Let us know what you find out.

My truck and dual sport have factory exhaust and are not required to have an additional spark arrestor since the exhaust system takes care of it.

Regardless of what type of vehicle you use to enjoy our great trails, I always recommend that you go street legal and insured so you can legally travel designated dirt ROADs with your OHV. Adding the OHV decal is required for dirt road & trail travel in the following:
motorcycles, ATVs, SxSs, and other specialty OHVs weighing less than 1800lbs and designed primarily for Off Highway Travel.

While it is possible to modify a street vehicle (think rock or dune buggy) and qualify for the OHV Decal, standard SUVs, Jeeps, Trucks, and best of all VWs are not required to have a sticker to travel on OHV routes. Similarly, dual sport motorcycles are not technically required to have an OHV decal since they are designed primarily for on highway travel, but can be taken on trails.

Hope it helps,
Jeff
