After looking for quite a while, and joining the site two years ago... I finally picked up a car.

I found it on Craigslist, went and looked at it, and was able to make a deal I was happy with.

Here it is, after we drug it home:

I immediately started tearing it somewhat apart, to do some little stuff:

It's a 1966 swing axle rear, with a balljoint beam.

It looks like the pan has been coated with something- the best I can guess is that it's POR15 (of which I have no experience with) or some sort of bedliner. Either way, the pan is rust free top and bottom, and very solid.

The car also came with a partially finished rebuilt 1641, a ton of random parts, and an entire ball of wiring that I'm assuming was pulled from the car.

Here are a couple better pictures, of it sitting in the yard:

The fiberglass is rough in a few spots, and trimmed unevenly in a few others.

It looks like there's going to be a lot of sanding, and I'll probably have to trim the fenders back a little from where they're at, to even them out.

My original "short list" has changed almost 100%:

www.azbaja.com/ForumsP...=8347.html

!) I decided to go with a swing axle setup, for nostalgia.

2) The balljoint beam may be swapped out for a linkpin and coilovers still, that's undecided.

3) I'm still going to run reduction boxes, along with lifted spindles for more clearance.

4) Large tires will still be there.

5) I'm going to forego the convertible top. I saw a curved, pop-out sunroof on The Samba that I liked... if I can ever find that thread again.

The first order of business is to mount the engine on the transaxle, and piece together the remaining missing parts to get it running. Once that is done, I'll figure out where to go next. This will probably be a "stages" type build, and I'm wanting to restrict most everything to simple bolt-on modifications- I'm sick of working on things, and having to one-off a lot of items.

Nice find. If your going to stick it out with a swing axle there is no reason to have a coilver front end with only 4" of rear travel.

Nice Baja I was wondering if it would turn up again I seen it on craigslist.
It sounds like you have a pretty good plan. If you're going to go with the swing axle with gear reduction boxes talk to Bill at Arizona transaxle exchange he might be able to make you a deal on a transmission and reduction boxes. If I can make a suggestion if I was to do my front beam again I would make it 6 inches wider and buy one from bugIlla there's nothing wrong with running a ball joint beam is long as you're not racing the car but make sure that you replace all the ball joints before you hit the dirt and inspect them yearly for damage. If you like the stock look and want a bolt on fix adding and inch and one half of ground clearance find a VW thing front beam the lower ball joint is upside down making it less likely to separate. Now that you have the pan off this would be an awesome time to mount the IRS pivot points just in case you ever decide to go IRS. I would mount the IRS pivot points I believe it's 4 inches from the horns and purchased the rear beam is extenders that way you can use the long torsion bars with the short swing axle spring plate's this would take a 3x3 trailing arm and turning into 7x3 trailing arm with no additional cost and also welding the brackets on doesn't require you cutting into the horns.

Enjoy your ride

Nice find, keep us posted on what you do. The body looks like it is around a 68 with the fuel door and the door handles.

The build will definitely have "stages". The end goal will be a nice, plush ride. The only reason I would convert to a 6" wider linkpin beam/coilovers right away would be to circumvent fixing the current balljoint beam... I don't exactly want to sink money into just a regular Type 1 balljoint beam.

This would be the only way I'd stick with a balljoint beam. As I read somewhere (here or The Samba)- the lower balljoint works against itself on the Type 1 beam, any impact or force acts on pushing it out. Now I'd just need to find a cheap Thing beam or spindles and trailing arms.

I was "told" that it was a 1968 body. It's good to have confirmation of that.

Tonight I worked for an hour or two, I mounted the engine on the transaxle, and started assembling the random engine parts that weren't bolted on. Namely, I removed a dent from a pushrod tube, installed the pushrods, and installed the rocker arms.
