Started tearing down the Carb I got from Biblethumpingcop and ewe it must have sat in the rain for some time. Lots of corrosion and deposits in the float bowl. Don't know if this one can be saved. The Air Jets wouldn't come out just yet, but everything else I was able to get off. In the Carb cleaner the base went and it'll be for a couple of days. Then I'll clean, run air through the passages and throw it back in with the top for a couple more days. It should at least look pretty. Smile

Boy I could see why whoever had it stopped using it. There was a ton of crap in the filter and in the accelerator pump. The Idle jet was plugged good too. Hopefully it'll turn out to be a good carb.

Completed the long block for the rail (still need 1 push rod, you would think with all the VW parts I have around my place I would have a full set of pushrods) Now I just need to finish all the other stuff on the rail, so I can install the motor.

I checked my junk piles and I don't have any. I thought I did but I can't find it. I thought I only had a couple somewhere because I had bent one and figured at least I would have found that one. oh well.

Yes it counts at least in my book!

Looks like a chore, but the rewards will be plentiful when you're not stuck somewhere due to a short, etc.

That last picture reminds me of the XXX movie where Vin Diesil says to the kid when he asks what do you want installed? He replied "Everything!" LOL

"Everything!" is getting tiresome. Can I quit yet?

Here are some "progress" pictures. Did not get much done on it today. Seemed tough to work on for some reason. Called it good for today and walked away. New fuse / relay area, and even picked up a fancy LED license plate light to stay legal for the runs to Sonic. Added a horn to boot.

As my primary goal is if / when somebody comes behind me then can figure it out, I went ahead and labeled all the circuits.

Figure I am around 45 / 50% done. Started at left front headlight working in a clockwise fashion and next is engine area then left tail light. Then off to dash area, sort that and be done.

The Green Baja is back in the driveway. Now it is too cold for paint (Rattle Can Krylon Blue on the cage). I will finsh doing the wiring up front, Head lights blinkers, fuel pump, fuel selctor upper and lower fuel tanks, skid plate and horn. All do to go back onto the car. I'm going to pull the rack off and have some mounts welded to it so I can strap down the spare tire a little bit better than it is.

Why is it soo soo cold. It is Arizona. Might have to wait a few weeks when it get into the 60's or 70' again.

Who would of Thunk that that VW Baja would be bigger than the wifes Jeep. Just to give you an idea of how wide the baja is. The tires are rubbing the curb with the Baja. The jeep is not even close to the gutter. Looks like another poor parkig job by the wife with the jeep in the center of the street.

Well, yesterday I pulled the dash. Frustrated at that very moment. Was having a heck of a time figuring out what did what. Walked away from it yesterday. Today was a new day. Removed the last of my nemesis; "the nest." Threw it on the driveway and did a victory dance around it. Neighbors think I am daft.

By chasing each lead out I was able to sort it all but the ignition wire I cut on accident. That is the one last bug a boo. Managed to get the dash out 100%. Set it on the table and have spent the last five hours re-working all of it. Time again for a break I think. Tedious.

Replaced springplate bushings and torsion arm bushings. Found them very worn on the upper insides. Reindexed the torsion bars one outer spline to raise the rear and hopefully help with the neg camber issues. Next is to install raised spindles and disc brake package. Shooting to be done with all this by next week, have been slowed down by Flu stuff.

I swapped and sold parts today. I picked up another Type 1 transaxle from Tobiism in trade. Sold the 90.5 pistons and cylinders to another guy and a steering wheel to a third. It would be nice to get my carbs in this week, so I can pull the engine, swap carbs, swap transaxle, swap back to an original style dog house cooling tin and swap my alternator. It all hinges on getting my carbs back!

Wow, starting to see progress. Made a lot of it today it seems. We are slower than I would like at work so I took half day and got a lot done.

Fuse relay area is 100%. Dash area is about 90%. Still have to run power to GPS, intercom and Radio. Chase five wires down the left side of the car, then a few odd and ends and I will be done.

Would have liked backside of the dash to come out a bit tidier, but that is a take away for next time if I ever do this again. Smaller gauge wire on back side of dash would have helped.

So far pretty pleased with it. Course the real test will be when we hook the battery back up and see if everything works.

Figure about 6 / 8 hours left
