What I currently have. 1970 VW Beetle, IRS rear link pin front with raised spindles. Disk Brakes in front, drums in back. What i think to be a 1914cc engine *will be opening her up to verify* the transmission, don't know. I'll have to look into it. The rest is pretty standard fare aside from the front link pin being a nice set up for an adjustable front end and having a brace for the shock towers that i need to re-weld...

What I plan to do with the bug is put in a roll cage that ties into the rear cage. Remove the gas tank that currently sits up front and move it to replace the back seat. clean up all the fiber glass and put in a roof rack that I'm currently talking to corralean about. *another forum member here has one that turned out super sweet.* Also plan on going with a dual webber set up currently have a single 40 IDF.

So History behind my Baja Bug is that I bought it about 5 years ago, at the time the only repair I had to make on it was the throttle linkage broke on the inside of the tube. It was repaired at a shop because I was not in the area when it happened *I had just joined and reported to my first unit in the US Coast Guard. I then towed the baja from So-Cal to Neah Bay Washington. Soon after i had issues with the engine not running right and was forced to abandon doing any work to it due to parts availability and delivery issues in the remote area I lived in. After my first unit i moved to Seattle for my second tour. I didn't have room to store/work on the Baja so I took it to my parents home where it has sat...until today. I am extremely happy to see it again and to finally get to do some work on it. So to start off this build I will be calling it "Lucky 13" due to the year that I finally get to put some work into her and also happens to coincide with 13 years I've known/been with my wife.

The first thing i want to tackle on my build is what some mechanics up in Port Angeles washington did to my lube oil pump. I have an external lube oil cooler that i know they blocked off but i remember they took something out of where the pump goes, I have yet to open it up, probably will do that tomorrow after i drain the oil. If anyone has any guesses on to what it could be...by all means.

If anyone could give me any info on a good photo hosting site id appreciate it.

Welcome! Congrats on the '13'!

I usually use photobucket to host pictures, but have been using google more since it works well with Picasa that I have installed on the computer. It just isn't as friendly to get the urls to paste here as photobucket is.

Thanks Conundrum.

So today I spent some time with Lucky 13 figuring out what I wanted to do and just a look through of what i had.

Carb is a 40 IDF weber made in Spain. I need to rebuild it, make sure it's properly jetted.

Engine looks really greasy and dirty on the underside, where the case meets, I am unsure on weather this is due to the oil drain plug/filter not having a good seal or if i'm leaking through the case half's. It does however look like the oil i put in since last oil change back about the time i dropped it off at my parents is still there lol. The oil *from my experience as a mechanic in the coast guard* looks clean and the level looks the same. This makes me think the engine is not actively leaking, or the oil/dirt that is on it has plugged the leaks. I plan on cleaning up the underside of the engine next.

As far as rust on the body, none other than a small hole on the drivers side forward wheel well, i'm planing on patching. Pans are good except under the battery. It looks like the previous owner put a new quarter section in, but I am not sure if he just dropped that piece in, welded or what he did.
Either way he did a crappy job because on the underside the rust broken area is still there, wasn't cut out and wasn't dressed up in any way. I plan on removing the carpet and probably buying a new Quarter Panel/battery tray area and fixing it properly. Other than this the car seems pretty sound as far as rust goes.

I'd like advice on what to do regarding the carb. I really want to get a dual weber set up but not sure if it's worth it without having a 1914cc engine. *I don't know if I do or not* I really don't want to spend money on fixing the engine up if I open one head and find that there's damage on the inside, but at the same time I might prevent more waste of money if I don't.

Anyone have any thoughts, would be greatly appreciated.

I'm getting my Picasa Account set up and I'll have pictures to show soon.

Thanks everyone who replies.

That should be a pretty good carb when jetted properly. There's a lot of hassle when going to dual carbs with syncronizing them and linkage issues in my opinion.

Mine is rusted in the same place and sorta repaired in the same manner, but I really didn't care and it at least plugs the big hole in the floor for now. Smile Someday I'll get the sheetmetal and replace that section.

Welcome to AzBaja. Your single carb is better for offroading. If your running mostly the streets and fire roads duals will run smoother, stronger and if the cam is not to large pass emissions.

Perrib,

I'm good on emissions here in California, Don't have to do any smog tests. My plans for my bug is to run mostly street/fire roads and possibly find a nice off road area that isn't closed Sad Possibly do sand dunes at some point if i can't find fire roads lol.

I noticed your intake does not have preheat. That makes it run rotten when cold.

So I went to SoCal imports spent 80 bucks on a new hardware kit.
Rebuild kit for the 40idf. Came back to the house and a friend and I tried to start it up prior to me replacing some rusted bolts and doing a rebuild of the carb. Looks like battery is dead. Will need to replace. Was also wondering if anyone's got tips on re wireing the baja. It's current wires look like a rats nest.

Well O.o "Lucky 13" went a long time to update. Had transfer season sneak up
On me and almost sold her. I'm going to be in the SoCal area another 4 years so the projects back on. Did more research recently and one of my issues is the fuel pump. Going to get a new one soon and a new battery so I can restart the car. I'll be having to do some work on fuel lines and fuel hoses prior to this as well. I also came across a sweet deal on a set of dual 40's. They need a little love but I'll get them cleaned up. Got them for 200 and they're originals. Will again post pictures and try to not let it take a long time between updates again.

I suggest getting a compression leak-down test on the engine. It involves pulling out the spark plugs and applying air pressure to each cylinder at top dead center (not cranking over) to see if there are compression leaks, and if yes, where they are at. I'm up in the desert over 100 miles from you. You might talk to 57Baja on here, who has a VW/Baja shop in Pasadena called KaddieShack.

And since you're gonna be in the LA area for a while, you might also be interested in our Baja Bug group "SoCal Bajas"
Web site: http://www.socalbajas.com/
Forum: http://socalbajas.yuku.com/

I suggest you check out the engine before you change carbs. That single carb would be enough to get the car going too fast for the suspension as it is for offroad use.

I must have missed your thread earlier. I've logged in several times since you started it. Weird deal that today I'm reading a novel where the DEA hides a witness in a house in a place I never heard of before today called Neah Bay. My cousin has lived in Port Angeles for several decades as a Park Ranger in Olympic Nat'l Park. I guess that's the closest town to Neah Bay, but I've never been there and never heard of it. Just bizarre to read about the place 2x in one day.
