I bought "Clyde", our new 1973 bug-eye baja. Turns out Perri built it years ago.

Ordered up some new seats and belts. Work continues on new tranny install. Which is good cause I done blowed up the 002 last time out.

Will have some fair condition blue PRPs and a fresh 002 from AZTransaxle for sale soon enough. Well, depending on if it is cost effective to fix prior to selling. Bill's call on that.

I picked Clyde up from Perri's. He's been a great help. I picked up a new cap and rotor, fuel line, fuel filter, Mann Oil filters (mine takes 2), Bosch plug wires and sent my Kadrons to the Kaddyshack today.

Replaced the flexible aluminum fresh air heater tubes and the oil tube gasket. Nice to be warm in the mornings...

I degreased the engine and skidplates. Man! There must have been YEARS worth of grime on it! Power purple and a powerwasher did the trick!

Well, got the car back. Long process. Wish I had the skill set to tackle this project – I do not. Jason at AZP Concepts does though and I can’t say enough good things about him.

Now have the a 4E with 2D upgrade, etc. Guess I am one of the cool kids with a Mendeola? Gearing is not 100% but Bill @ AZTransaxle suggested we run it as is, figure what I like, what I don't and then we will rebuild / regear in summer.

In the course of swapping tranny it was discovered that the axles were too long for the 002. They needed 27 1/2" for the new narrower tranny and come to find out they had 27 1/2" on the old wide one. Course because they were too long they were mushroomed, etc. New 300 M axles. The car on hard impacts would "splay" too wide. That is most likely what caused the crack on the frame. The reason it was cracked on the right and not the left is that the tranny / motor was not 100% centered. Both of those issues have been resolved. Will still be reworking torsion tube area in summer and possibly address any triangulation, etc at that time.

To install tranny it required that motor and tranny be raised. That resulted in cross members being cut to allow for height and engine cage being cut in a likewise fashion. New motor mounts, etc. Because some area was lost under the rear deck lid of the body, power steering pump has been relocated. Because tranny went taller, fuel pump has been relocated. Oh yea, this also required new starter and limit straps. Big thanks to AZ Transaxle for the deal on the 300m alxes and having everything that was needed in stock. Pretty much the whole back end is reworked excluding the motor.

There are new seats ordered from TripleXXX / Herbie. Really tough getting seats for this given the space constraints. Hope to have them in for the next dune trip after new years / February. For the time being I also swapped out the old three points and put in five points. With the current Beard super seats they have no choice but to be over the shoulder seat area. Held onto the Y belts just in case it is an issue over this coming dune trip. Had some additional bars put into the cage area. So right now we are just at seats pending and some new lights...... Always something no?

Bigger project coming in summer to include re-install rack for spare at cage area, etc etc.

Really like they way it turned out. Mendi looks so much better sitting there than does the 002.

Good thing I bought this car with the full expectation of getting it sorted out.

We are one step closer to having it sorted.

I started the fiberglass repairs on the nose and driver's side front fender. I hate the mess!

Put the oil drain plate on the rail motor and cleaned up some other stuff to continue putting it together, pulled the ecm from my truck so I can get a new one to get it running again.

This week, I tightened the oil sending unit and oil filter, both which were leaking. I have great friends in the VW community! I Dirtjunkie, Wideopenmotorsports and 64VWBug helped me a bunch this week.

I removed the spare tire mount, and got a rear seat in great condition for $30! I also picked up a set of KYB shocks for the front. The brake pedal now remains in the forward position, rather than falling towards the driver. I also swapped steering wheels.

These accomplishments may seem small, but make the baja much more driver friendly. Friends are awesome!

I got some parts from the Above ^^^ Smile Thanks! Also scored some good deals from Karls and Dougs at the swap meet.

Repaired my brake lights and headlight not working. Both caused by loose contact at the original fuse box fuses. On the wishlist is to completely rewire someday. For now I just bent the tab carefully so it'll have more pretension on the fuse. Drove it tonight to get the rockers from Eric and the lights stayed on. Smile

Drove it! Does that count? Had a good dune trip.

Have an intermittent electrical issue so brought it home a few hours early and started the rewire. Not a pretty sight up under the dash currently. But that will change. I hate cleaning up wiring messes. Guess on the bright side I will be able to sort them in the future?

Current condition and soon to be reworked parts...

Yes it counts at least in my book!

Looks like a chore, but the rewards will be plentiful when you're not stuck somewhere due to a short, etc.

That last picture reminds me of the XXX movie where Vin Diesil says to the kid when he asks what do you want installed? He replied "Everything!" LOL
