I used one of these on my Xterra. I drilled and tapped a hole in a solid block section of the removable housing. I figured worse case if it ever had a problem I could just unbolt and replace. It worked fine though and it's a really small hole for the sensor.

I also wired up this same setup for my brothers Crysler Cirrus to control two fans (on/off at same time). Worked fine, but he did smoke the fuse holder at one point, probably a weak connection and it got too hot. Replaced that socket with another and everything else is holding up and he uses it everyday.

Simple enough to wire and you don't have to stick a probe through your radiator. My Brother lives at Cactus and Reems area if you want to see it installed. Or if you're in my area 43rd and Bethany Hm Rd I could show you my Xterra.

Shop around for what your options are, I just grabbed the first one I came to.

Laughing Well, hmm, yeah you'd think that I'd have already hooked that stuff up, but well I guess I've been a little lazy there. I suppose I figured since they are basically throw away motors, if it doesn't have oil pressure I'm not rebuilding it anyhow so why worry about it. It dies, it gets loaded on the trailer and towed home. Shocked

I wired my fans on full-time. If I change that, I will simply put one of the thermostat switches into one of my coolant hard lines and add a secondary switch so i can also turn them on manually. For oil pressure, my buddy tells me (he's running the 2.4's) that they simply take out the factory sender and put the new sender in it's place... we actually disconnected my sender and the computer doesn't care. I think you can get a brass adapter fitting at Checker (metric to 1/8 pipe). Temp sender I think you can put it in the factory location as well, but not sure.

Got mine licensed last week and loaded it full of buddies on Sunday for a trip out Table Mesa towards Seven Springs. The torque of these motors is awesome. Makes it so easy to drive. I could just lug the thing in 1st or 2nd and it just pulls and pulls.

Just use a 3 way switch if you want control over the fans for a manual mode. One position would be the normal wiring of the sensor I showed above and the opposite position would be manual on, bypassing the sensor wiring. The middle would be completely off.

The only time I would use that completely off position is for water crossing, which I rarely will do unless there's no other way around.

water crossings... what's your reasoning there?

I don't think I'm smart enough to remember to turn something like that back on!

HAha, yeah that's why I said I'd only use the Off function for that, but have to remember to turn it back on. Smile That's why I didn't put a switch on. Prior I had tried the probe type and it was a miserable failure.

I meant on the 4x4 Xterra, if you turn the fan off when crossing water, you'll keep the engine dryer and you won't be churning all that crap up against the radiator. I had a friend mud bog literally with her Xterra and it chewed the radiator all up with the crap being flung around in there. If she could have turned off the fan, maybe the radiator would have been spared?

I would still be using the sensor and fan, but the fan I bought couldn't keep up with the longer hill climbs, so I need a higher CFM fan to keep it cool and couldn't afford to buy it yet.

I did run accross a great deal on a Oil cooler that has a fan attached and have debated with myself where to use it. LOL So many possibilities, Oil or trans on the Xterra? Oil on the Baja? Put it on our Trailblazer? Just couldn't decide.

I bought a 185 degree temp. probe from foddrill's a few weeks ago. I think i'm gonna make myself a fitting that goes in between the two heater hoses(the ones that are right by the thermostat housing), and get my water temp. from that. A trip to ace hardware will probably get me what I need. I guess I don't need a temp. gauge, but sure would be nice to have one.

Although I haven't put them, I did pick up a set of these...
www.summitracing.com/p.../overview/
best deal I could find on electric gauges.

Is that temp switch a 1 wire or 2 wire? If it's a 1 wire, don't forget that you'll have to ground the body. A few years back we put one in a hard line in between two rubber lines and couldn't figure out why the hell the thing wouldn't work... doh! Also, if you are using that temp switch to provide ground to a relay, that's where you can add a toggle switch to ground to turn the thing on manually.

How did you tie your heater hoses together? The 2.4 is probably different than my 2.2 but I've got to figure out a better way to loop those hoses.

The one I used is two wire and basically acts as a thermal relay, normally open until (Temp) and then closes to complete the low amperage side of the coil to the relay engaging the high amperage side turning on the fans. One wire from each fan to ground and then one from each fan to the existing wiring going to the relay block.

It also had a provision for A/C so it manually turned the fans on when the A/C compressor is engaged.

Yep, you described it better than me, but same thing. You can buy the switch itself as cycleguy said he already did from Foddrills. The two wires are probably easier to deal with in this sort of situation, but if you were screwing it into the engine block, then it's just an extra unnecessary wire. Good call on the A/C provision.

I like to keep it simple as possible and when I found the kit that did it all, I was happy. I hope he can get the wiring figured out. If not I might be able to come out to help and at least get it sorted out and running. Sometimes you just need someone who can take a fresh look at something to point out the obvious. Smile

I'm sure he's pretty far from me, that's the only drag. Just let us know.

I appreciate it that you would come out here and help me get it running. I have a friend of mine coming out tomorrow to help me finish the wiring. I got the ignition and fuel system wired up and working. The starter is shot though, so I had to run down and get a new one at o'reilly's. It would barely turn the engine over, not letting it spin fast enough to actually start. I'm gonna put the new starter in first thing in the morning and hopefully be burning fuel tomorrow afternoon.

No Problem Smile

Be sure you have good grounds between the chassis and the Engine as well as to the Body or that could cause the slow starter too.

Good Luck and let us know if you need help.

Ok here is the update for today, and what I got done. Got the new starter bushing and starter installed. Seems to crank ok, but still will not start. I have triple checked everything and still have not figured it out. We checked for spark, which there is plenty of. Got it to pop off for a very short second on ether, so I know there is spark. There is plenty of fuel to the fuel rail, and the injectors have power to them constantly when the ignition is on. However, there is no "intermittent" power to the injectors, allowing them to shoot fuel into the cylinders. My guess is that phil at the bug shack in kentucky didn't have the computer programmed correctly. Maybe the VATS or vehicle anti-theft system has not been disabled properly in the computer programming he did. All of the wiring is basically done, all switches and relays functioning properly. Brake lights, tail lights, headlights, whip lights and fuel pump all work very nicely. Also, got the fans wired on a thermal 176 degree switch, and they will come on at that temperature. I can also turn them off manually with the toggle if for some reason they don't need to be on. I have been trying to call phil and he will not pick up the phone, period. I have tried calling several times this week and also a few times today. Maybe he closed up shop, who knows. It would be nice to at least be able to ask him some questions. Does anyone know of a place local here in arizona that can take a look at this ECM? Maybe one of you guys can bring your ECM up here and plug it in to see if it will fire off. As usual, any help is very greatly appreciated.

Maybe a bad crank or cam sensor? Does it have an OBDII Port?

Sorry you're having issues and hope you get a hold of phil.

I'm still air cooled so no help there, but I do have an OBDII Reader that works pretty good. It did run on that ECM before right?

It does have an OBDII port. I have a scanner that I pulled the code with. It was a code for the fuel pump not working, it wasn't recognizing fuel pressure from this aftermarket pump, apparently. This is the ECM and wire harness that came out of the same wrecked cobalt. I'm gonna call phil until he calls me back. If that doesn't pan out, I guess i'm looking for someone to take a look at this PCM locally.
