New guy here from South East FLA. Been in the VW scene since I 96' with my 71' 1302 having the case of the jiggly frontend decided now to turn my 70 std into a baja bug. Although i was a purest in restoration now its time to hack, cut, weld (jb or mig etc). time to not worry about getting a scratch, ding or a bang on my car. Only issue is that Iam not to experienced in high end motor building and suspension works. So hence i joined. Although I will be adding pictures before and after my plan it to put in a 2275 motor 94mm and 82 stroke crank. looking to go single carb but again not surewhat would be best. Eventually Id like to run 30 or 31 inch tires and although there is tons of mud down here I am not looking to get into that just offroad hammer down try and catch me driving lol... hence why id like to build a beefed up motor. Have a 6 point roll cage and mnodifiying all the stocking wiring (yanked out) and hopefully getting everything going by summer time. Any help suggestion would be great.... Oh and about that bus transmission, yup totally lost as to which one to get and what mods. again not looking to have a racers per say just something to have funny with and do about 70mph without worring if I will grenade something. Compromises will have to be made, this I know, so hit me up with any hints, comments concerns etc...

I will be posting pictures soon, question now is where to start. I am planning on running my current 1600 and tranny as just going to freshen it up put new plugs etc etc. Engine has been sitting around for 5 years but i have faith she will run. Thus, while engine and tranny are out I am taking off the fenders and wanted to order a baja kit. What is the consensus out there about which kit is best to use quality wise. Also just asking here but was looking at body lifts and was wondering how this would influence a bolt in roll cage (Looking to get chirco 6 point cage as a basis)

What do you guys think of this style intake. Do you think its worth the hassle. I am ordering my 82mm crank and 94mm Jugs and was wondering if its worth doing this. Also what Carb setup would be best I am wanting to stay single carb possible 40 IDF or 44. i want to keep the compression at about 7.5 so i can run good on 87 octane gas. Decisions.

@perrib, i saw the extra thick kit and was wondering if its worth paying for it?

What style intake?? Keep in mind a single carb and passing emissions is hard to do and impossible with larger cams. I'm building a 82x94 that is going to use either the VZ 14 cam or CB cheater cam. I'm leaning towards the cheater due to this may end up being a single carb engine.

The thick kit should be worth the extra money but it will weigh more.

Cross fire intake (sorry forgot to post) & No emission in my area so I guess that's pretty good.. Cam wise just doing a 110 rockers at 1.25... So don't think it's that wild...

As for weight how much more could it be over the metal stock fenders? I know I will be adding a roll cage and additional hardware but I am just trying to figure out if its an oz of prevention so as to not have cracked fenders etc...

A plenum style lets each cylinder draw from all the fuel availabe from both barrels. An air cooled.net intake with a 45 carb. Dual carbs would be better. Whose heads??

Haven't thought of a specific head just PP 040 heads and was trying to keep it simple for repairs quick adjustments if need be...

As for the cross fire intake. I made something like it fo a T-4 style engine from an old header, FI end castings and no preheat. The carb set up on the intake about a foot above the engine, looked cool and the customer who only ran it at Rocky Point said it worked well. You being in sunny Fl, preheat may not even be needed.

Welcome to the site!, "A Baja in Central Fl here". When it comes to wiring check out Rebel wire, they have a complete harness kit with fuse box. Quality is great and I honestly couldn't build one for what I paid.

Allisontech thanks will be ordering my wiring soon. Today I'm picking up a baja kit near me for 200 dollars but has a hole in a fender and going to see how bad it really is. The issue I have now is rims and tire. For now I am staying with my 1600 DP and stock tranny with the dilema on how big I should go. Was thinking 30in tire 15x10 in the rear and 30 15x7 in the front in the front? Opinions.... Also I am looking to see who has those solid aluminum wheels like the one Pedro the baja bug has Centerline wheels on the 4 bolt vw pattern. Although i have a new set of spacers to run chevy wheels, I dont feel secure having an additional item to do this? Also, Id like to convert over to disk brakes at least upfront and was wondeirng if I should wait and just run the adapters with cheap tires?? DECISIONS!

Its really up to you, just do the math when converting the front brakes,it's real easy with minimum backspace to need a spacer to keep the caliper from hitting the rim. I just spent the weekend up in Pasco at Bug Jam and it's the only part of Florida that isn't flat, With my 1914 and 31" rear tires we pulled the hills with ease, some of the 1600's did keep down shifting to make it to the top. Allot has to do with your ring and pinion ratio too. There is a wealth of knowledge here on the site and I'm sure everyone will be glad to let you know what they think.
