What was the first year that IRS was used by VW? Was it 1969 or 1970? Thanks

1968 as I believe that the 1967 was the last year for Swing Axle.

Very late 68 had IRS while the rest had Swing, all 69's and newer are IRS, i think around 72 they started using Mcpherson struts.

Like Rage said, LATE 68 and up were IRS. Most 68s were swing axle though. I have coverted an early 68 to IRS and had to cut a bunch of material to weld in the IRS pivot brackets, and done later 68s that had the material already gone for the most part, but no pivot brackets.

Actually, to confuse the subject even more; It depends on where you live to know what year they changed because in different countries it was released at different times. Most european countries got IRS before America did for example.

68 was a borderline year. you could get swing axle but only 4 lug. irs came out and is only 4 lug. 68 is the only year of the 4 lug swingaxle. nothing special about it though. there are so many irs swaps done though you might find a earlier one irs. alot more bajas were converted though.

I am finding a few earlier bugs with the IRS conversion. Makes me a little nervous though. I'm not sure I would notice if the conversion was done badly or not. Depending what I find I think I'm going to stick to the stock IRS models. Sure seems like there is alot more pre 69 bugs for sale out there.
