It been 5 months since I've sold the avacado bedliner bug. The funds aren't available from it anymore (life happens). I found a very inexpensive roller that is going to be the bones for my new project. I hope my 13 year old son will take an interest in it.

The goal is to scrounge parts from here and there, bartering for stuff, selling off surplus things to pay for other parts, and assemble it as time goes on. My first baja I cut about 8-9 years ago was a bugeye kit. That's my goal again.

The rear tray behind the back seat is completely rusted out. I can see the transaxle from the top! No glass, except the door glass. Only 1 fiberglass buggy seat. No engine. Front fenders are loose, but won't be used. It has a clean rear cage as well. Clean title with matching VIN on tunnel.

The plan:
Find a narrow eye baja kit and install.
Install a flatbed kit to make a pickup! Yo- Tinman!!!!
Needs 4 wheels. These are mismatched and 1 is bent. Probably put Cavalier seats in it.
Paint? Hmmm, always partial to bedliner! Ha!!!!
Slowly look for engine.

Here are some pictures of the beater:

NOT TO SHABBY FOR $160!

I posted a couple local ads, stating I was looking for parts on a barter budget and have had some helpful people step up. Looks like a pair of centerlines or knock off centerlines may be coming home, along with enough parts to build an engine or two. I should know more about two deals in the works in the next day or two.

A box of .38 special shells is being swapped today for two hoods and a bugeye nose. The flatback kit and seats will be here on 11/03. Jim gave me a front bumper, and I already owned the rear cage. Thanks guys! Wow, I guess it's time to get to work!

I picked up the narrow eye nose and hoods today. This is the first time my son has ever wrenched on a car. I am pumped! He removed the stock hood.

A big time score today from another Dad who helped his son build a bug several years ago. Lots of stuff went home with me today. Another may follow me home this weekend.

This batch had: 4 centerline style wheels, 2 stock chrome 5.5" wide wheels, type 3 short block, Type 1 AH dual relief long block, weber progressive carb, dual Solex 40 carbs and manifolds, Solex H30/31 carb, 1 complete set of SP heads, 1 complete set of DP heads, lots of tin, old style headlight I need for my bugeye baja nose, IRS case and nose, starter, other parts like rockers, valve covers, 3 stock bumpers.

I dropped off a dual relief type 3 short block and a couple sets of heads, plus a dual relief type 1 longblock, in addition to other parts with Dirtjunkie today.

I picked up another dual relief 1600 shortblock Wed that also had DP heads, tin, alternator, etc from Prescott- in exchange for ammo. It spins freely and should prove to be another piece in working towards putting a solid DP together.

My son, Ryan, and I cut the nose off the bug, in order to mount the bugeye nose. I was very surprised to see someone had put spray foam in the spare tire section of the trunk. Not only that, but the saw quickly cut through the bottom of the spare tire area, because it wasn't sheet metal- IT WAS PRESSBOARD. They had put two pieces of square tubing to support the pressboard. So, once we removed that junk, I found I now have a 4" gap between the bottom of the nose and the body. I will probably fiberglass it together.

We also started cleaning the nasty crude out of the trunk and cab of the baja. I hope to suck alot of crude out with a shop vacuum and use a power washer ti blast it clean.

The flatback kit is here! Thanks to Tinman for bringing it with him from Las Vegas. I also now have a set of seats. Thank you!

I looked at the schematics and think it would be safest to somehow integrate a cage into the flatback kit. I can't wait to start cutting the back off.

The structural strength of the vw is the body. Convertibles needed frame rails for support. A cage would give the pan the extra support needed when you cut the top. I think it would look cool too!

Below is another azbaja link with info on cages for a bug.

Start with the blue, add the red sections to tie it all together and end up with a cool VW Bug off road truck.
