So i am new to VW beetles and am completely lost on what i have. I bought the beetle parts off a friend who is moving out of state and was going to build a 54 manx, so the chassis and pans were chopped 14 inches.

You have a 54 pan. The front axle, trans and engine are 61-65 parts. The engine is a 1200cc rated at 40hp. I don't see much to improve that rating. The trans will not bolt into the pan at the front unless either the front shifter housing on the trans has been swapped for an early 60s bus piece, or the mount welded on the frame has been replaced with a later piece. I''m not too sure where you found the "311" part number for the front axle. That would indicate a Type 3 front axle, which the one you have is most clearly NOT. Was it maybe "113"?

i was told the front end is a type 3 front beam but the person wasnt sure. the 311 was on the sterring box on the front end i just checked again. the pan is a 54 but the chassis itself isnt a 54, also what i was told along with the entire chassis/pan was chopped 14" since it was going to be a manx.

The number on the steering box does not speak for the entire beam assembly. Note that where I said before
"You have a 54 pan. The front axle, trans and engine are 61-65 parts. The engine is a 1200cc rated at 40hp."
I was referring to parts from that vintage of Bug. VW's old parts numbering system really made a lot of sense. Parts for Type 1 cars the part number started with "111" or "113". "111" indicates a "Standard" Beetle. "113" indicates a "Deluxe" Beetle. All VW Beetles sold in the US from the beginning through 1978 were at least "Deluxe" models. From 1971 on, Super Beetles were added. Base model Bugs had no "chrome" trim on the sides or around the windows, painted bumpers, and other details that varied from the Bugs sold in the US.
Parts for Type 2 Bus the number starts with "211"; Type 3 fastback/squareback/notchback, the number starts with "311"; and for Type 4 fastback and squareback, the numbers start with "411". Parts for Rabbits/Golfs, Jettas, New Beetles etc. are different.
