So, as cool as it looks, I'm having a hard time "dialing in" the cantilever suspension idea. I originally had stock torsion bars turned up, but was still bottoming out too easily. So I upgraded the bars to 28mm and started to get too much bounce.

It seems like the 2:1 ratio on the bellcrank might be putting too much leverage on the shock which is not able to dampen enough, being alone. My best guess is that I would need to double shock each corner which would take a lot of additional fabrication. Ideally, the bellcrank may need to be a 1:1 ratio to work properly and there just may not be a good place to mount shocks with that setup.

I'm considering other optons, but will probably go back to a more traditional shock mount through the wheel wells. Confused

spend some money on a rebuildable shock. you can adjust the valving in the shock to work with your setup. if the car is bottoming out, its most likely not due to the torsion bars, but the dampening abilities of the shock. now that you have larger bars, the rebound on the shock isn't enough and that's why its bouncy. get a shock that you can adjust valving with, and you won't have to change anything. setting it up properly though will take some trial and error, you just have to be patient with it.

Love the ecotec swap. I am toying with the idea but unsure of costs. Do you have a rough cost on the engine, ecu, harness and adapter?

What are you using for a throttle cable set up? I am using a 3.5 olds put have not got to the point of a throttle yet.

Yeah, I will. However from what I've learned, I would need to double shock the rear wheels which is pretty pricey, and it just gets too complicated for me to figure out the proper valving.

I believe that the 2:1 ration of the arm is effectively taking the valving of a rebuildable shock and cutting it in half. So it would take two per wheel, and then it still might not be enough. It's the leverage of the arm that's throwing things off too much to resolve by just changing to a rebuildable shock.

I think this setup might work if you could afford to tinker with it and throw lots of trial and error type money at it....which I can't. Sad

Well the used motor was the cheapest part of the conversion. I think I got mine for about $250 used with low miles. I went with the guys at Turnkey Automotive in Oceanside CA. They sold me the harness ($600) ECM $675), Flywheel and Adapter plate ($475), fuel pump, filters, etc....it gets expensive real quick. But they assembled it all and made sure it ran. That was a real time saver for me, and let me focus on the rest of the car.

I've read about guys doing it for less and using a lot of the GM parts, but I just needed a quick, clean solution and was willing to pay for it. It's not for everyone. I've spent a lot of time thinking through all the bugs. It does run very strong though. Too strong for my current rear suspension setup, hence the need for a change.

Good question. I tried rigging up a cable from a Cavalier and splicing it to the existing VW cable, but it didn't afford me any sleep at night knowing it might brake at any moment.

I finally went with a custom made cable from Pegasus racing and never looked back. It's well worth the money. with the ends they sell and a simple ball end, you can hook up to the GM throttle body.

There should be a contest for the best custom glove box in a Baja, because I feel like I could win that one.... I had a fiberglass glove box from glass-action that I was going to install a radio in. Instead I used the flat panel to mount some charging accessories including a USB, A/C, and Cig lighter outlet.



My favorite part is the open design and bungee netting in front, to keep it all contained.




Mounting the box was a challenge, but these little turnbuckles and some steel strap (I've also discovered the beauty of rivets) seem to do the trick. It's very sturdy.

Were did you get your bungie net? The one over my glove box is getting starting to fail. It has been in the car for well over 18 years now. I got mine out of a wrecked Ford Astro Van.

I've had that bungee net for so many years now just waiting to install it I've forgotten what it came out of. I believe it was from a pick-a-part type salvage yard and from an RV or conversion van. I had to cut it down and modify it to fit. Wish I had more to sell or something.

I have the inverter on the semi-flat spot just behind the glove box now. It's only on with double-sided tape (3M) for now, so I need to fasten a bracket soon. Many inverters have built in mount flanges, which would have been nicer. The switch on the panel turns on power to the inverter.
