Anyone have any advise on stretching a pan and body? I'm working on a baja build and seriously thinking about cutting the top off and stretching the pan and shell 6 to 12 inches to allow more leg room for a rear seat. My thought was remove the top for more head room and ease of getting into the baja in the rear. Then I started thinking about stretching it 6 to 12 inches and making the cut about 3 inches behind the doors and moving it back. I think I could make the pan very solid with the new roll cage and tie everything in. The roof would be gone so just build a solid cage with rack on top and then use sheet metal or a donar bug to fill the 6-12 inch stretch side panels. I'm also going to make it mid to long travel front and back with 3x3 or 3x5 rear arms and an a arm front suspension. Any advice would be great. I live in north phx 55th ave and pinnalce peak area and have most all tools, cutters, benders, tig and mig welders, etc.

Thanks,

Sounds like you have it all figured out. The hardest part will be cutting it in half. let me know if you need an extra hand. I am not to far away (new river).

Seems it would make more sense and probably be less $$ to buy fiberglass VA convertible body panels like for a Class 5 race Baja to do a stretch Baja. Crumco and Kartek have them.

You come up with any ideas. I have seen a couple of 4 door Bajas with just a soft top over the cage.

I've build a jig for the past week to keep the pan square and help me with measuring points when also build the front long travel. I'm going to cut the pan and body about 5 inches behind the door seal. I really want the rear of the body to stay in tack and use the fire wall already on. I already cut the top off. I have my eye on another body at the minute and thinking about buying to fill the side panels in with steel. My main goal here is to get about to 5 to 8 inches of leg room for the rear seats. The roof is going to be a custom roll cage with a soft top or floor type storage are (ie. tire, etc up top). I'm kind of stuck until I can pick up a transaxle. I'm trying to find a cheap 002 for the V6 Honda motor that I have. I need the transaxle to help line the new roll cage up, going from front to back all tied in. I have decided not to widen the bug, just to much work. Thanks guys.
