Hey guys I just recently traded my quad for a 1964 baja bug as my first car, ive always been interested in VWs and i finally got one and had a few questions. Its a 1642 dual port with a dalarto carb and empi stinger, sounds good but it boggs out sometimes im thinking it needs a carb adjustment but a friend said it could be the spark pulgs (i replaced dist cap and rotor recently). we checked spark plugs and wires and they seem fine but the bogg bothers me. Also it does have an electronic fuel pump a spectre but im not sure if that could be a problem either. I was also told it could just be me because im not used to the car completely any suggestions would be great. I would upload piks but im still learning how to use the site ill upload some asap.

The Dellorto carb doesn't like fuel pressure more than about 3-4 psi. The electric fuel pump may be producing as much as 7-10psi. You can get an inexpensive fuel pressure gauge and put it between the fuel pump and carb on a tee fitting to check pressure. There are inexpensive fuel pressure regulators available to control it if it has too much pressure. I have one of the cheap ones on my car. It works fine, but the numbers on top do not produce the same pressure according to the gauge. So I set the regulator by the gauge. Then I put a dab of weatherstrip glue on the edge of the knob to keep it from turning and took the gauge out.

I think i may have one its set to 4 psi but the previous owner didnt block off the stock fuel pump right could that be an issue as well? thanks for the response

You could leave the stock pump in place with the hoses bypassing it to the carb. That would work fine.

Or if you remove the stock pump from the block, you need to take out the pump push rod and the bakelite pump rod guide, then install a blockoff plate on the studs.

One of the folks on here had a stock fuel pump fail, so he went to a parts store and bought a pump like yours and a blockoff plate. He didn't know the push rod and bakelite needed to come out. After a while, the push rod hammered it's way through the blockoff plate.

With my regulator set at '2', it made nearly 5psi. So it's set below '1' and makes about 2.5psi. Works nice that way for my Kadrons.

Although I ran the same carbs set up the same on the 1641 in my 67 Bug for over 100K miles with no regulator and no issues. Don't know why on my Baja they need regulators.

Yea i was planning to do that this weekend along with a breather box. By the way i checked out the socal baja site im in Ontario and realy interested in the meetings and what not any info on them would be appreciated!
