thats really cool- pinewood derby and square back, my sister had one in high school she and my father built.. on tie rods i would tell you to get heims, some people have a hard time finding them but im swimming in them since i have an AMP as a friend who brings me home heims from commercial aircraft. my linkpin front end was a bit old and rusty and i didnt realize how bad until i tried to spin off the old stripped out tie rods and install heims that i have, needless to say the tie rod ends are unremovable from my tie rods so i made new tie rods and to be honest it seems like i freed up about 1.5 to 2 or more inches of travel just from adding heims!

thanks on the congrats but its really blind luck. I've tried all different things to make 'em run fast but in the end its just chunks of wood down a track; my oldest ran his car from last year which won nothing last year but did OK this year- go figure.

On the Heims; the front end of the squareback is the Type-III ball joint not the linkpin - would they work? not sure they would.

Heims work but the won't cure your bent rod, they won't help increase your travel as the length of the shock limits the travel. If you do convert you need to ream the hole to the proper size in the spindle as the bolt needs to fit snug or it will eventually make the hole egg shaped as the bolt acts like a lever. There are some studs with a tapered end for the spindle and a straight end for hiems out there. Now maybe you could get Bugzilla to make a long arm for a T-3 beam. The T-3 front torsion bars are stronger than the T-1 leaves.

OK - so sounds like if a Heims conversion is to be done mods need to be done generally on the front end; shock mounts, etc a good Bugzilla fabrication. Not that I wont endup there or similar right now I know I need more basic stuff like tie rods, and then skid plates, at least a roll bar if not a cage, - maybe I should post my wish list of things I think I need done, and an order and have folks chime in on relative worth...

Looking back I should have just taken it to Perri - thought I could deal with tuning it myself; then neighbor jumped in to help, then his friend at his shop.. looks like the Empi carbs are missing a plunger-

in the photo the port on the right had nothing in it but a brass lock washer while the one on the left had a brass plunger and spring held in place with a lock washer...

the carb on the right side had two plunger sets- although one is sticky.

is the spring set and plunger available?

and the gasget sets..

Im liking the roll bar idea instead of a cage....even though the T3 has the room and isnt so restricted....Id love to see a Zilla take on the T3 Beam and travel...thats right around my 5th out or maybe sooner if i flip projects.

Well spent every few days for the last few weeks on the phone with Joe @ Chirco VW down in Tucson trying to get the dang little brass things... (they are really helpful BTW). Apparently the CA warehouse kept sending the wrong stuff- he finally went directly to Empi and as of this afternoon they are heading from Tucson up here -! yay!! along with the brake master cyl. that also went out on me...
Soon to get the parts - let see if it works.. Very Happy

At some point here is my wish list of upgrades keeping in mind its a family knock around trail rig not a racer.
Skid plate rear, skid plate up front, narrower tires up front (currently hits on max turn and bumps fender on max up travel), as POCman said I'm also thinking rollbar or simplified mini-cage. Want to get three point sholder belts in the rear but still use the fold-down seat for hauling when needed. And also would like to look into a body lift to help with the wheel travel issues... but time + $$ will dictate... and its never really done, right? Rolling Eyes

Space is limited in any VW or small car for that matter....and commercial cages just dont do the car any justice. I have a T3 in the yard....but that will be there for a few.....since its five out and im a part timer.
Maybe ill look into it tomorrow before work......but im already thinking a tight double hop right behind the front seats (im guessin the double because of the long and flat roof) and a single back by the c pillar....aka the rear seat body structure.

been a while since update- got most of the minor issues corrected and got the car registered in AZ (yay!). Then spun a hub. (boo)... After replacement @ Perris, the lug bolts stripped out, and lost my wheel - looking to rebuild...

Have you ever checked out 57Baja's squareback he built for his son?

socalbajas.yuku.com/to...AjnrZHNmKk

57 is a regular on this forum and an advertiser. He can give you ALL kinds of info on building a squareback like what you're talking about.

Bugzyla built a very nice fastback too.
www.azbaja.com/ForumsP...=3092.html
Maybe his is a little wilder than what you have in mind, but there's a lot of knowledge there too.

Here's another thread on a squareback on here.

Yeah- Actually 57's squareback project was the first one I saw a year or two ago when I was first looking for ideas for a new toy. I followed that string and another one on the Samba by a guy in the Seattle area. About the time I was going to buy a body and start collecting parts the guy in Seattle decided to sell, we talked and after a marathon run up to Seattle and back to Phoenix - here we are. I did not make the connection to 57Baja until recently - I'm a little slow Rolling Eyes I will pick his brain and Bugz's fastback was way cool also - a little more rad than I intend this to be -at least for now - it's a slippery slope the wife does not see coming! Smile Thanks for all the help- this site has been great.
